Guest Guest Posted June 18, 2007 Julius-- I think the subject is interesting, originally composed and framed. The composition is good, especially rounded out at the top with the hat. The gaze away works for me here because I tend to see orthodox people like this as being a little removed and, whereas I usually like to feel connected to subjects in a portrait, sometimes a bit of distance works. I think the lighting doesn't work that well here, though, because the main focus seems to be the back of his neck and shoulder of his jacket. My eye is kept back there instead of wanting to move toward his face and eyes. Your isolating him like this provides, also, a cold feel which I think works in this case. Link to comment
Jebamony 3 Posted June 18, 2007 Fred ~ thank you. I am glad you are a fellow warrior. You guys are so good with your reviews and honest remarks. I didn't see the flaw [in focus] until you mentioned it. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I agree that the lighting did not work very well. I will experiment with different options. Thanks again for your visit. J3 Link to comment
mvisionphotography 1 Posted June 19, 2007 I too really think the white border really works on this picture. The contrast is excellent in this picture. I also absolutely love his expression like he is kind of perplexed. Link to comment
dee 14 0 Posted June 19, 2007 OK... other than the highlights on the back of the neck and brim of the hat, I love this! I really like the clean image that high key gives, it allows (if done properly) to really show off details. This is no exception. From the gaze to the hair, to the texture on his jacket, this is just wonderful! Link to comment
gerfoy3 0 Posted June 19, 2007 Wonderful shot... The focus and the light is on the back of the neck! The contrast between the shirt and the jacket is really interesting as is his hair and the way it is focused really draws focus to his hair (tight on the back and long after the ear). Fred may have raised a valid point but I say the same as I said on Freds image. If this is the way you meant it then it really works and maybe people should question intend before comments! Ger.. Guest Guest Posted June 19, 2007 I think what you say about the intent of the photographer (and particularly what you said in your nice comments about my portrait of jay) is a really great point. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Warriors (since we are a critiquing group) to have some back and forth thoughts about critiquing styles and effective means of talking about each other's photos. dee 14 0 Posted June 20, 2007 It's hard to question intent on something that is so subjective... I agree that this might be a better discussion left for e-mails, but to say it as you see it might be the best philosophy. As we get to know each others styles, it will be easier for us to decide if it's artistic choice, or an oops I think. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted June 20, 2007 We'll get to know eachother's styles soon enough. I love this portrait. I understand what everyone is saying about the back of the neck but I also feel as though it adds to that feeling of "turn my back on the material world" kinda feel. Beautiful tones. Link to comment
