About the light it is pretty easy, a good light sore is big in relationship to the aria it suppose to light

The sun is bigger than anything but because of the distance it is like a thumbnail on an arms distance. So avoid direct sunlight and use big reflectors ore umbrellas ore soft boxes. Try to measure the over all light so it under exposes a half step and put a normal expose on the model.. most camera try to normal expose the flash so if you put it in manual and try to get it on 0,5 to 1 step underexpose and shoot with a flash (even the built in will show you the effect)

Here is a link that show a bit how it works.

but it do not have to be a studio flash, a whole lot of my pictures are made wit an canon 430 camera flash and a transmitter ore cable. it must just be enough to overpower the aver all light at the location.

For my indoor shoot I work the same way I try to keep the light big and close to the model.

Se a lot of tutorials here.
