Skye Light

ian cameron

Location: Quiraing, Skye, Scotland. In order that I could make the best possible use of first light breaking over the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye it was necessary to get to my location prior to sunrise. In summer that means about 4am. The sky duly turned the most gorgeous mix of pink and magenta topped off with bright orange as the sun neared the event horizon. I realised that although I could clearly see the sheep grazing on the shapely sculpted plateau of grass in front of me, Velvia was going to struggle. I was forced to fit 5 stops of ND grad to control the contrast differential to an acceptable level.Pentax 67 II, 55-100 zoom lens,Fujichrome Velvia F8 at 30 sec's 0.6ND + 0.9ND hard edged grads across sky. Please check out the New Photographic Holidays on at TRANSIENT LIGHT.

I love the sky Ian with its superb colour's, the foreground exposure is excellent but I'm not so sure about the hills being in such a dark silhouette, anyway it?s a super image well done. Regards Rich.

Ian, I guess there was no way for you to get more details in the hilltops (apart from performing and HDR digitally). I find the silhouette OK. Indeed beautiful colours in the sky. I read 30 second exposure in the details - the sheep did not move ?
