You have touched on "solitary" so well - the isolation the palestinians must feel. But also the small child in the center of this mayhem! But on the same toekn, you have also portrayed "solidarity" - which seems in opposition to the word "solitary" . Boy talk about making us think! NOw on to the technical.. good job! I lobe the colour and the composition and as I say - the one lone child looking back at you. The lampost is almost saying there is light at the end of the tunnel (not likely in my lifetime) Good job!

Excellent image Julius. I agree with Jan on her comments. What a political hotspot. I think if someone nuked that region, you would end up with enemy molecules still fighting.

A unique perspective on our title. I guess one could say they came together to create one "Solitary" Voice. Good for you.

Thank heaven Jan put into words what I doubt I would be able to say! So much said with in one photo. So different than what I expected to see. I am laughing at your response to my email when I asked if you wanted to join the group! I believe your words were "I will try to do my best." You are too humble my friend! Excellent!

You didn't miss the point at all. I noted the flag - but I also noted the posters "peace for both Palestinian and Israelis" so the flag did not seem out of place. It was in solidarity with everyone there - both palestinian and israelis. As someone else said A SOLITARY voice. But I must say - this is a very powerful image.

This is a great documentary photograph and also a great take on the "solitary" theme, because--for me--it captures a number of "solitaries." First, there's the sole Israeli flag flying in a sea of Palestinian support. I assume there is a Palestinian flag somewhere nearby, as one side of the signs seems to suggest the hope for both peoples to coexist. Perhaps a dream, but one worth having. Then there's the sole pair of eyes on the woman looking right at us, the sole profile of the guy in the foreground, and--as has been said--the notion of "solidarity," having the same root as the theme word that inspired this photo. The composition is great, catching the heaviness of the archway overhead which also acts as a great framing device. The sole lamppost in the background caps it off nicely and creates a nice tension as it almost reaches the curve of the archway. As a documentary (or event) photo, it works so well, especially because there is an interplay between subject and photographer, the connection of that woman's eyes to us brings it all a little closer to us as viewers. --Fred

First thing to capture my attention is the flag... then my eyes move through this very heavy photograph. Being a musician... maybe that's the reason for this... I am overwhelmed with the cries coming from this crowd. It's impossible for me not to hear them. I think Fred said it best... lol.. I was hoping to beat him to it. You have captured the theme "Solitary" in so so so many ways with this one image. Wonderful documentary photo.

What makes this for me is.....

NO VIOLENCE! AWESOME.....no guns, no bloody fist, no swinging bats at each other...

Technically, not much to pick on. Exposure, composition, color and assignment all captured well and uniquely.

Julius,

Excellent documentary shot. The solitary Israeli flag is an excellent take on Solitary. However for me it is the Solitary child in an event of adults demonstrating against an issue that began before any of their births. Plus the fact that he is looking right through the camera has to make him the focal point of the image. Its for that reason, I?m going to say, if this was shot lower down, it would have displayed even more his difference and the people around him. However, you were focusing on the flag so probably didn?t even see the boy at the time.

My first instinct was did he PS a boy in there.

This was an excellent example of the task at hand. I also noticed another girl to the right peeking out so I can imagine there were lots of kids being dragged out for the cause of their parents as we tend to do with our kids.

Theis is a great example of how you can be in a crowd of people yet still be isolated and alone. WONDERFUL! ~ micki

The first thing I saw was the Israeli flag, then my eye immediately went to the yellow "Free Palestine" sign. The blue and uellow really stand out and are an interesting contrast. This is a great documentary type photo --Jason

Hi, Julius. Hope your trip went well. Love the photo you've submitted...a completely different take...very thought provoking. Everything I'd like to say has been said, so I'll stick with "well done" for now! :) Can't wait to see what you come up with next week!

Interesting picture, I don't know much about their situation personally but I think that you have done a great job with this theme.

Great Photo Julius,

the only thing I would maybe do is to the left of the their is something green (kinda Leaf Like) I would have maybe cloned that out it is a bit distracting.

But that is all otherwise Fantastic Job!

the colors are great..

I think that this theme would work better with in a portrait format with a tighter crop. I know that the whole idea is the sea of protesters vs the one boy looking but I didn't even notice the boy until I read some of the comments.
