There is a tendency for people to take happy snaps of things that touch them and post them here just because they, themselves, think they look cute. I do not get the feeling with this shot. You have put some thought into it and it shows.

Being honest, I am not a great fan of the colour with B&W mixes although it is something I do myself quite a lot.

I like the composition but would like to see just a little space above her head. On the subject of her head, I would love to see more shots of her hair. It is very interesting.

Good one.

David,

Thanks for your comments; I admire your work, and always appreciate your remarks, since this is new medium for me, and I need to learn a new language.

Isabella had just had her hair done, and I thought it was unique enough to highlight it. I liked the pose, and thought that the body lean and glance lent itself to the broad negative space on the right.

As far as the cropping, I tried to bring the image plane as tight as possible to open up the space on the right. I'll play with the image and see what happens with more space.

Again, many thanks,

Glenwood

Glenwood, this is a technique I do not know how to apply, and I understand what you are doing. It is interesting because her hair screams "look at me", and making everything else desaturated really hits the viewer over the head with a hammer. For that, it is maybe inappropriate for this image. Desaturating skin and people drains life from them. Maybe that is the what the first commenter was saying about this technique. It is interesting for forcing attention. Thanks for posting this.

Kurt,

Thanks for your comments. I agree with you about images being partially desaturated; I usually prefer either all color or all B&W, and dislike overally PS-ed shots. The few times that I have done it in the past, I have only taken the color out of a background scene, and left the figure in color.

But I thought that it works for this image, since any teenager who has her hair colored like this is already saying to the world "Hey, look at me!" Plus this image captures several other aspects of Isa: Her posessive pose with her "dearest friend", Puppy (that is the dog's name, by the way, sort of like Cat in Breakfast at Tiffany's); her refusing to connect with the viewer; her turning to the "negative" (as in space), instead of the "positive"; etc.

Ah, teenagers! They are wonderful, even when you want to kill them!
