sambal 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Maria, thanks very much for your comment. Now these birds are disappearing from west-european cities. So, I'm always glad I detect one in an urban setting, like here in a park on a Spree River bank in Berlin. Cheers, Sam. Link to comment
maria 7 Posted June 19, 2007 Any idea why they are disappering in Western European cities? In Bucharest, Romania (Eastern Europe) it is full of them ... thank you Maria Link to comment
sambal 0 Posted June 19, 2007 Maria, from what I've read about their disappearances, it appears ro be due to the fact that many cities are getting too clean for their taste as less food is available. Also, renovated old building have less holes & cracks, rooftiles are not broken or displaced by wind/rain, etc. That leads to less nesting opportunities. For swallows, sometimes special nesting rooftiles are provided when buildings are renovated in cities where in summer swallows nest. Cheers, Sam. Link to comment
