dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 The self-assignment was to go out my front door and return in 10 minutes or less with a half-decent photo. It was getting dark, but there was enough light to hand hold this at iso 400, which wasn't that great, but thanks to superior photoshoping skills, I was able to bring out enough detail to declare the assignment a roaring success. (OK, so it was a small goal, and therefore a small success, but I have a fragile ego to nurture, so get off my back!) Many takes were rejected because of the shape of the flame. In some shots, it was straight up, very boring. In others, it whipped too much this way or that. This was one of the better ones, with not too much whip, but not too straight, either. Exposure was 1/160. This is what I did last night. So, which critique category does this go in? Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 Fantastic photo! Can you show some of the reject flames? Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 Thanks for your positive feedback, Doug. Here are a few rejects, plus the one posted, third down on the right. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 Doug, the bottom one on the right looks pretty good. How come you didn't pick that one? Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 Two reasons, Doug. First, the rain gutter was in the shot, too close to the torch. Second, the smoke and flame of that one is interesting, I agree, but I thought too interesting. I wanted to photograph the whole torch, and a flame with too much energy would have been too distracting. But, the gutter was the main factor. Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted June 11, 2007 He sure is. I hate to interrupt this conversation, but it is obvious that no one is home at Photo.net tonight. I prefer the one posted, Doug. If I went out to get a photo, I would come back with a black rectangle. --Lannie Link to comment
mmmee 0 Posted June 11, 2007 So, it would have taken more than 10 minutes to find your tripod? You haven't used it for so long. :)) There is noise at 400 and that bokeh looks like something I can do with my Canon S3 IS. Just telling you this to take your mind off your PSing practise. Do you think you could add the rolling flame to this one? The curl would look good with that white triangle of the background deck. This is a naked flame so I think you should put it in the nudes category. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 nudes! of course.... good idea. Hi Maggie. I don't know which one is the "rolling" flame, but it would be too much work, switching them, and not really worth it. Not for me, at least, but would you like to make a go of it? Link to comment
mmmee 0 Posted June 11, 2007 The bottom right is the one I thought of as the rolling flame. But now looking at it again, the top is cut off, so ... I am not good at PS. Link to comment
