Artisti in Piazza

I like this photo. It's a good example of one where selective coloration works very well.

There are some nice geometric elements: the lines of the trombone itself, the counter lean of the musician, and the stripes on his shirt. All go roughly horizontally, but in slightly different directions. They give a kind of stretchy, energetic feeling which goes well with the character of the instrument. The expression of the musician is also good, suggesting how wrapped up he is in the music.

Most interesting of course are the reflections in the bell of the trombone. Wonderful! An entire world is in there. I would love to be able to see it even larger than the large view. Even as it is, we can see the plaza, the surrounding buildings and sky, and the other performers. The shape of the bell also gives some great effects: for example, the slide with the right hand of the musician appears on both sides, encompassing everything. It makes a great metaphor if one wishes to read it in that way. The bell also reflects itself, giving a nice deep coppery tone to the reflections of the reflections.

The one aspect that I don't quite like is the other performer in the background. It's good that he's there, but I'd like to have just a little more separation between his head and the edge of the bell. But of course it's difficult to arrange everything so perfectly in a dynamic situation.
