The Storr is a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula of the Isle

of Skye. The hill presents a steep rocky eastern face overlooking

the Sound of Raasay, contrasting with gentler grassy slopes to the

west.

The Storr is prime example of the Trotternish landslip, the longest

such feature in Great Britain. The area in front of the cliffs of

The Storr is known as The Sanctuary. This has a number of weirdly

shaped rock pinnacles, the remains of ancient volcanic plugs. One of

the most famous of these is known as The Old Man of Storr.

I took this picture last weekend, on my recent trip to this lovely

place. The morning was simply amazing. I was there with my friend

and we took off about 3:30 in the morning - just to get to the top

well before the sunrise, and have some time to find a proper spot.

This place is such an amazing, almost lunar, landscape so the

possibilities are almost endless.

When we reached the top we encountered virtually four seasons there

(cold wind, heavy rain, hail - but, what's important - amazing

light). There was nothing but pure magic happening in the sky.

I took this photo a bit later after a proper sunrise. I'll post

something else quite soon.

Piotr, getting up and setting off early is but a minor thing to achieve shots like this. I hope you had a good breakfast :-) Mike

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it :)

Mike - not really :) I only managed to drink a cup of tea :) - but when I see views like this and a light like this - it is all I really need to fully "charge my batteries".

Cheers, Piotr.

Simply put, this is one of the most beautiful images I have seen in a while. Just sterling! Keep up the good work, my friend. Cheers! Chris

Piotr - I like this dramatic shot and I think the foreground is particularly good as the rocks are well lit so you can see the lichen. I wonder if the shot would be improved by cutting off the top inch or so from the sky? I think the deep blue of the sky doesn't quite fit with the dramatic & contrasty feel of the rest of the image, and compositionally I think less sky might work better. I will give this the high rating it deserves when I'm allowed to give you a high rating!

It is not difficult to create pleasant landscape pictures. It IS difficult to create landscape pictures that are dynamic and powerful. This image is both.

Piotr: this is one of my favorite images that I've seen on PN, and that it has been added accordingly to my "favorites" folder. Thought I'd let you know that.
