Back in the Saddle

Dartmoor again, a favourite location that is a complete nightmare to capture with any sense of drama. I have been here about 5 times in the last two months as it is close to my house and every attempt has been ruined by good weather!

EOS 5D 24-105 f4L f8 for 1/60th using an ND grad for some stupid reason.

I love this image, nice texture and I would consider this successfully dramatic. I'd be interested to know the process you used...do I sense a little post work, particularly with the light rays? Certainly grabbed my attention, good work.

I love the dramatic sky and the details in the foreground rocks. Regarding your comment about using the ND grad, I don't think you would have been able to get so much tonal variation in the sky without it.

An exposure blend would have been far more suitable for this style of shot. The problem I had to spend a long tiome correcting the blackening it caused the main lump of rock, something that would have been totally avoidable with a blend. Ah well, I am not moaning anyway, I personally really like this shot, it is the only good one of the location I have.

David--Another winner. I know you think a blend would have been slightly better but I can't see much room for improvement in this shot (maybe I could if there were a side-by-side comparision). As always, your composition is great and eye for the scene is dead on. The tonal range you captured is great and at the same time very real. By the way, I've been working on the blending technique you recommended...work is still pounding me right now but will be slowing down after this TUE...I'll put more time into it then and let you know how things turn out) Always good to see new work from you! Oh yeah, you said this is your "only good shot" from this location but I don't believe you--I bet your worst shot is better than the best one in 99% of the portfolios on PN! Keep up the great work!

Hi David,

I really love this one, there are many fine images to be found on photo.net, many technically perfect - but not many make you feel something - this ones an exception.

Best regards, Stephen

A dramatic scene, very well captured,David. I like the composition of three dominating subjects here(stones, tree and sun) building a diagonal.regards, maria

Great, David! Exquisitely beautiful landscape. This back-lit image is truly gorgeous! I love the harmony these rocks, clouds, and a lone tree create!
