Black, White and RED

Nikon D2Xs, Nikkor 12~24 f 4, converted to Black and White (schwarz/weiz, chernoye/beiele, blanc & noir, through Photoshop's Channel Mixer, by checking (ticking) the monochrome button and moving the color sliders 'to taste' (not a manipulation under the rules) This image is unmanipulated, as a result.

'Black, White, and RED' is a very subtle 'street' shot taken in the

Paris Metro one day, where it runs above ground and thus is an

elevated train, on a southerly line that passes near the Eiffel

Tower. Please note the careful captioning and 'view large' if need

be to fully evaluate the reasons for taking and posting this photo.

Your ratings and critiques are invited and most welcome. If you rate

harshly or very critically, please submit a helpful and constructive

comment; please share your superior photographic knowledge to help

improve my photography. Thanks! Enjoy! John

Wow, that was fast, just after posting. I hardly had time to dial in on my own photo and there was your kind comment.

Thanks.

This one is 'subtle' by my standards, and the blacks were kept totally black on purpose -- all by design in most of my photos, as I do have options with the use of Photoshop and I DO know how to use it, though I use it minimally. I wanted the woman to appear dark as a lump of coal, to emphasize not only the blackness of her attire, but also to 'bring out' the 'redness' of her glasses earpiece, which was a very minimal amount of redness -- just as the poster's woman had minimal redness -- corset, ribbons on ankles and script.

In many ways a very 'minimalist' photo for a 'street' work.

This is absolutely a color work only; it does not show well in B&W; in fact it is a play on the sublety of the duality of the use of red in the two subjects -- poster and citizen.

A 'coincidence' if you will, or divine providence if you followed me around that day and a prior day or so and saw how many 'coincidences' I seemed to find and photograph.

Nobody expected this would get 'high' ratings, though I like it, but it was a 'have to post' just for the color 'mirroring' nevertheless.

... how else would we get the perfect match of the line of her glases as if the same artist painted the background and her glasses. Even the width of the line matches, emphasized by the lower swirl of the "s" coming past her face. Very subtle, very fine.

Then, just for chuckles, did a quick b&w version. IMO, you are absolutely right, color is better.

That's the only reason for this photo being in existence.

It's a most subtle photo and most raters either didn't 'get it' or didn't care (probably the latter) as it isn't too stunning in any event. I posted it out of conceit.

How possibly could I have seen that, but I did, I'm sure I did?

(By the way, I sent a missive today to Elliott Erwitt, asking if he can give me some time -- we have some commonalities, I think, though I could never match his greatness. For one thing, he speaks Russian; his parents were emigre Jews and he was born in France and fled to the USA on the last boat that left and made it.

(went to Hollywood High -- perhaps your friends know him--he is concerned people think he's dead -- or so he expressed in his book 'Personal Best'.

I assure you, this guy's got a steel trap mind for images, one of the world's best ever.

He ran Magnum for three terms, while former co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson did his 'thing'.

And bless him, he has a great sense of humor. Why not check out his web site?

You'll laugh yourself silly if you're in the right mood. Just put his names together and put '.com' after them.

Elliotterwitt.com is all you need with IE6 or later.

Go ahead, enjoy yourself.

I'll let you know when my return reservation is made; I missed mine on the 26th due to 'illness'.

... from my Altamira life, John, amazing stuff. One of those guys who you say "HE took that shot" as image after image are recalled from your life. Hope you get the chance to meet him, it would be a thrill.
