cromwell1664877587 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Amber was quite the sport for this photo. The front of the lens was 1 inch from her nose and I held the flash from about 1 foot above, and she let me take as many shots as I wanted. Link to comment
mgrimsley 0 Posted May 29, 2007 lovely shot simon. would have ruined it if left in colour. Link to comment
dangoldman 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Perfect! I wanted, literally, to get this shot a while ago, but i guess my dog's nose just wasnt long enough to get the effect... This shot is perfect, especially the upturned eye. Link to comment
cromwell1664877587 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Thanks guys. I totally agree, Matt. The first thing I did in photoshop was lose the color. Dan, I still can't believe she was looking straight up at the flash. I was shooting at iso100 f16, so I know it had to have been putting out some juice. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Incredible POV and DOF! Nicely done - the nose drip is perfect! Link to comment

None of my shots with the closed down aperture came out (was before i had an external flash) which is why i ended up just doing that short DOF experiment that i posted. Link to comment
laurap 0 Posted May 30, 2007 I absolutely adore that cold, wet, big nose. Great light and B/W works 100%. Grat work! Link to comment
kurt2006 0 Posted May 30, 2007 Scott, your work is always fun and inspiring. It is interesting that at f16 there is not a totally deep focus and the nose is slightly forward of the sharp focus. I hope your dog can still see after all that flash work! Cheers. Link to comment
cromwell1664877587 0 Posted May 30, 2007 Thanks for all of the comments. Kurt, it's kind of deceiving looking at the image, but her nose really was just an inch from the lens and I didn't have the focus set all of the way in. I'm sure her foot is in just about as good as focus as her eye, but it's not nearly as sharp due to the lack of good lighting on it. She seems to be ok today. Yesterday she was squinting quite a bit...I'm sure from a scratch from the tall grass she was retrieving in, not the flash, though.:) Link to comment
martinstott 0 Posted May 31, 2007 this has to be one of your best shots to date. it would look stunning printed poster size, you should get in contact with some photo librarys as this is very comercial and im sure it would sell. pure gold mate 7/7 Link to comment
cromwell1664877587 0 Posted May 31, 2007 Thanks, Martin. I just got done telling someone I think this is my new favorite photo. I also just got done telling him I'm not sure this would make a good quality poster sized print, because it's only 4Mp. It's incredible how wide an 8mm fisheye is....lens against the nose and still a 50% crop to get her close enough. I know very little about printing, but I'm guessing black and white is a little more forgiving when enlarging prints. I think I'm going to find out very shortly. It looks 10 times better set as my wallpaper as it does here, so I'm sure a poster would look excellent as long as I'm not too short on pixels. Link to comment
