From a pure artistic point of view, I like your crop better. However, it is difficult to identify the fact that it is the Marine Corps Memorial in your crop.

Thanks for the comment!

Congratulations on the great capture. How many days did you have to get up early to catch this one? I was there last fall, missed the sunrise and the sun, it rained all the time that I was there.

Would you share with us your exposure information: that's graet light on the wall below the troops??

This was the result of 2 mornings. The first was to get the exposure values and to define the rough scene by taking a few test fotos. The second morning this foto was actually taken. (exposure values ISO 100, f/4.5, 1/30 sec with a 40mm lens on a camera with a 1.5 form factor). The resulting foto was processed in Capture NX by increasing the color saturation, lightening the front of the monument such that the uncommon valor inscription can be read and sharpening. The vivid orange sky color is a result of increasing the saturation. Note that the sky has this color immediately after sunrise.

I've just started reading Flags of our Fathers, the story of the men in the original photo that inspired this memorial. I have vague memories of seeing this as a child, when my parents took us to Washington. That trip included a viewing of the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier(s). I recently told a neighbor that the trip was wasted on me at such a young age, but now I know that it's effects have endured through the years. Neither mine from 2006, nor my father' from 196? come close to the honor you pay the troops with this capture.

Very nice background for this image. If it weren't for the dramatic light, it would be just another documentary shot of this memorial. Nice work. Cheers, -Clayton
