A nicely composed shot! There are a few things I might improve upon if this were my photo: first, the image seems weighted a little too heavily to the left side of the frame - the natural light from the window overpowers the rest of the composition. Second, balancing for several different light sources is a huge pain, but I think you might be able to adjust the right side of the frame slightly in post, as the fluorescent/incandescent lights very much alter the mood the overall image. Once the colors are a little more balanced left to right, I might dodge the bookcase slightly to bring out some of those details.

Regardless, this is a nice shot.

thanks for sharing.

love the way this is composed so that we are drawn to the window, inclusion of a person on the chair adds beautifully to this, so much to enjoy here.

Roger I like this crop just as well. I can't take it apart to analyze all the pieces separately. It just works as a whole. It's like a good book itself.

Roger, I agree with Erik about bringing out some detail in the bookshelves if possible. Don't agree about balancing out the lighting. What first struck me about this photo was the way you managed to capture such differing types of light so well. There's an incredible contrast here between the whiteness of the daylight and the "yellowness" of the lamp lighting. There's an openness in the left side of the room and a coziness and warmth on the right. I love your ability to have caught two such distinct moods in one photo. And I'm sure that's exactly how this room feels. I think any post-processing light alteration might compromise the sense of space the photo has. (Guess that's why there's chocolate and vanilla!) The added space for the guy on the right at the edge of the frame helps.

Thanks, everybody. This is one instance where photo.net critiques have proved their worth. I think that this image has (and will be) improved as a result of good comments ( like a good book, Kenrick).

I like this reworked version better than the first. I love that you included the man on the right more fully, so there are now two settings in this one photo. There's so much to admire here--composition, lighting, colors, tones, subject material, and a mood of deep comfort in a sense that is intellectually stimulating and exciting and brings in nature instead of shutting it out.... I'm currently studying for my graduate comps, wishing I had a place to retreat to such as this. It's lovely. This is a 7/7. Thanks for reworking it. Your skills and your eye are excellent. I have much to learn.

Donna, you poor soul. My heart goes out to you as I've seen many people suffer through the agony of comprehensives. Not to worry, soon it will seem like a bad dream. Thanks very much for your comment.
