Quietly Walking through Mendocino

I like this one very much, Jeff, simple forms and subdued color locked together in a composition that never shouts but one which displays great internal harmony and strength. This whole California Landscape series is beautifully realized.

Jeff, this is a magnificent shot. The details, colors and mood are like part of a painting. You know what this reminds me of? That famous work by Andrew Wyeth titled "Chrstina's World".

Very nice composition. A lovely, well balanced arrangement of geometric forms in contrast with the natural landscape of sky and grass or shrubbery, can't tell:) I love these old weathered buildings. Well done.

I would only PS a little,to underexpose the whole image and do some burning especially in the clouds.I would also eliminate the pole on the far right.I imagine it would look perfect that way.Have a nice day and many thanks,you know why.

i can feel the wind. the bent over weeds are a testament to the harsh elements. even the weathered wood has a directional slant to the constant beating. beautiful rustic colors set off by the blue sky works wonderfully. wish i was with you on this shoot. i love these settings. well thought out composition for window position and roof to grass area. pleasing quadrants of interest. sweet shot, J.K.

Just browsing when I found this marvelous shot.

Judging by the number of comments above, I am not alone in thinking that this is a really great image. I think what really attracts me the most is the composition itself. The arrangement of the masses is perfect, and the values within each mass is perfectly balanced by the others. After really looking at the photo for some time, I realize that the image breaks down into many thirds, both vertically and horizontally, but it is subtly done and not apparent without a closer look. Horizontally, the roof and it's shadow make a third, the window and wall the second third, and the grasses the last. Vertically, the sky forms the first, the window and wall to the left of it the second, and the blank wall the last. The alternating colors and brightness values of each section further enhance the strong geometry of the image. Like another commenter above, I couldn't figure out why this compositon has such a magnetic attraction to it, and perhaps this helps explain it. The warmth of the colors make it such an inviting image and place - It doesn't look abandoned or forlonrn, but rather, a place in which the viewer feels right at home. The first quick glance I gave the image left me with the impression that the crop should have taken off some of the blank wall on the right, but a moment longer and I saw how perfect it is as is. The right wall is needed to balance off the left 2/3rds, and the 2 posts in the lower right corner also carry the interest of the observer. This is a perfect example of how to make a great image from seemingly simple elements. No fancy tricks, no outlandish subject, just attention to every detail.

Thank you for such an extensive review. Although I'd like to take full credit for being a compositional wizard, I'm afraid I'm simply good at editing and discarding the many shots that did not work. Photography involves a lot of luck. I'm afraid I don't hit the target as often as you do. I appreciate your thoughts!

Jeff I like the subtle palette and compositional precision that collides with the organic dry brush below. A complimentary blend of flat dimension lying in between a more defined 3rd dimension of dry brush and sky. So well done Jeff.

Thanks so much. Knowing then what I know now, I might have taken this a different way. Many folks associate California with LA and plastic, but some of the most peaceful times in my life were wandering up and down the sparsely populated northern coastline near Mendocino.
