Banff's Mount Mount Cephrehen as sunset clouds explode behind it far

above a curve in the Mistaya River. I forded the river in brutally

cold conditions, knowing there might be an amazing photograph if the

light was right.

IMpressive shot of an impressive peak. As usual caught in perfect lighting. Shame about the small bit of white cloud just over the very top of the mountain, but i don't think it detracts too much. I like how the choice of shutter speed has rendered the water. It really conveys a sense of power and motion.

Fionna, no. This is a single exposure. The white snow helped me maintain exposure on the mountain's backside and a little dodging took care of the weak grad-line.

Hi Marc,

I actually meant to ask you how you get to Mt Cephren from Banff. I will be going there this coming fall, and would love to get a few shots.

It's a hard mountain to take pictures of. This river isn't much help unless you get to the West side of it, as I've done here. The Waterfowl Lakes might offer some decent reflections towards the North End though. There are not any other openings in the forest for great views except the highway on the other side of the lakes.

Getting there is easy. Simply drive 150km North of Banff until reaching Waterfowl Lakes.

And by the way, congrats for your photo showcased in the June issue of Outdoor Photographer, quite the catch indeed!

This is truly amazing image, this image and your Glacier NP image are two which do the best job of revealing Dynamic Mountain Landscape. I have seen this image on your smug-mug site in the past and often visit to just get lost into this landscape.

There may be many great idols of light, composition and art for the photographers. But very quickly you are becoming the idol for the "dynamism" in the nature. This wild behavior of the nature is what favored me most, when I don't get to enjoy that weather outdoors, I visit your website. Your pictures bring the chill of the snow, wind knocked me out from the cliff, the swift currents drag my feet off the rocks in the stream, the salty water makes a splash on my face..and much more. You are an example and quickly becoming an icon. What I also appreciate much is what you frankly share your views and also techniques. I wish you all the best to be even more successful and bring joys and the zing that is missing from the traditional landscape photographs. If there is one addiction I can have to become high, I would drench in storm brought by your dynamic landscape.
