johncrosley 0 Posted May 7, 2007 I know you like to play around with saturation/desaturation, but this is a 'classic good composition' and I think it would be helped by simply keeping it entirely desaturated. Your use of 'threes' here is very able and attractive, and I think the use of a saturated dog, is a little detracting. I am very aware of the 'fun' you have had with saturating/desaturating images, but in this particularly good one, it seems to detract somewhat. I have a rule for my photography (not hard and fast). If color seems to help or if a photo is color dependant, I choose color, and if it's a matter of color detracting, and there's a good enough composition and/or detail, I choose to desaturate. I (and many critics) have a hard time with partially desaturated photos except as 'gimmicks', especially when a photo, such as this, would be quite successful, I think, as a B&W (full grayscale), completely desaturated.) And I do think it's a very good photograph, which required split-second timing and some very good photo editing to 'see' and 'post'. (not rated, but deserving of a high rate) Best wishes, John (Crosley) Link to comment
mvisionphotography 1 Posted May 9, 2007 I LOVE the way you made the dog the focus. I could care less about the threes and all that stuff but love the B&W feel with the dog in color. I myself DO rate photo's and will gladly rate this one high as you made the title the story to this wonderful picture. I think you did a wonderful presentation and would love to see this on a wall somewhere and would have a great conversation about if I came by it! ~ micki! Glad John noticed is so I could drop by and say hello! Link to comment
bag 0 Posted June 2, 2007 It's a very nice shot. Beautiful composition and lovely work. I like specially the B&W with a bit of color. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted November 12, 2007 Ok, I don't like the b&w vs. color gimmick, and I'd like it all b&w + cropped at right just where the wrist appears. But then, I think you have a strong photo, because de subject and framing are originally strong and very original. Regards. Link to comment
johncrosley 0 Posted December 15, 2007 I know part of your signature is playing around with your photos -- desaturating, changing colors, partial saturation of the whole photo (today's upload so far as I can tell), and partial saturation of a selected part of a photo (as here). So, I was browsing 'top photos' by 'yearly views', and saw this and thought I'd leave a comment that really you should desaturate this whole photo, to avoid its being a gimmick and that it stands on its own with desaturation, as an original composition. And, I also made a decision to suggest that you increase the contrast of all the photo, except perhaps the (mostly) black dog. Then I saw I already had left a comment suggesting same; well I'm still attracted to this photo, but still feel that it would do better with the change I first suggested. Just wanted to let you know I'm looking. (not rated) John (Crosley) Link to comment
