This photo is about contrasts -- a so-called compare and contrast cityscape, with the older or more traditional, foreground, compared to the ultramodern, background.

I think the foreground should have been emphasized more as it shows pretty dull; and it might easily have been adjusted in Photoshop (or other image editing program), by adjusting highlights and contrast/brightness, applying shadow highlight filter (maybe after selecting the buildings, foreground), using 'curves', using 'levels' or some other device -- Photoshop is loaded with numerous and overlapping adjustment devices for brightness and contrast.

I think this photo might have used some of those (also the buildings right, seem to suffer from being a little out of focus which is difficult in an architecture shot -- and it may just be a lens problem/issue).

I think this photo also could stand some 'sharpening' under 'smart sharpen' (Photoshop CS2 and later, and/or some other sharpening of the foreground. Not all photos must be supersharp, but it helps in architectural shots, as it's not only expected, but crisp, clean lines almost demand such treatment. (It's different with people, action, sports, etc., shots where you have no time to set things up and take what you can get -- you probably had plenty of time to stop, set things up, dial down your aperture for maximum sharpness through depth of field enhancement, and then take your shot. (Again, it's different in split-second 'street' shooting).

I hope this is helpful; your post suggests you are still working with essentials and I hope to help speed that along with what I hope is sound advice.

My best wishes,

John (Crosley)

Hi John, thank you very much for that heap of sound expert advice on improving this image, shot with a basically automatic camera & thus without real possibilities of composing the photo in an elaborate/better way. The photo was taken just after mid-day when the contrasts at that latitude are basically making photographing a very difficult task. As I was on the run during a too short visit, I only could do what I did. I now see the too compressed image I posted has some ugly blotches in the blue sky, right upper corner. To this reply of mine I'll upload another, digitally improved & less compressed, version of this image which might be a bit better. Usually, I try as little as possible to tamper with my photos by digital improvement techniques as I would like them to show up as I think I've seen the scene in realty. However, reality might not exist - apart from what's going on in one's mind;-) Thanks very much again & cheers,Sam.
