vancouverphotographer 1 Posted April 30, 2007 My friend invited me out to a photo shoot session he had organized - I tried to stay out of his way but I fired off a few frames including this one. Thanks for looking. Link to comment

vancouverphotographer 1 Posted April 30, 2007 Hey thanks Michael ... the lens is not new but usually I am using my 70-200mm or 100mm to do portraits - I thought I'd try using the 50mm for this session a bit more and see. I just shot this in available light at 800 ISO and cropped it. Link to comment
rogerleekam 0 Posted May 1, 2007 Dale, great shot. Warm skin tones and nice background. The 50 is f1.4 and should be great for available light, and also portraits. I'm planning to use a 60 f2.8 for portraits (if I ever do them). Link to comment
vancouverphotographer 1 Posted May 1, 2007 Thanks Roger, better to have a zoom but I guess when you have control of the situation, the primes are fine. That 60mm might be the best overall though, I'm thinking. I used my 85mm and 100mm before for portraits and it seems they're better for face shots even in an average sized room (had to do too much backing up). The 50mm, probably have to go fairly close to the model to get face shots (unless you do cropping afterwards). Link to comment
andrea allison 0 Posted May 1, 2007 Hi Dale ! Nice shot. I was just talking to someone about the 50mm and I really am convinced now to pick one up. Kind Regards Andrea Link to comment
vancouverphotographer 1 Posted May 2, 2007 Hey Andrea, thanks. With the 1.6x magnification on my Rebel XT, that 50mm becomes a telephoto lens. I had not used my 50mm much when I first got it 6 years ago but now that I got a DSLR, I find I am using it more and this is the first time I used it a bit for portraits. I'm not sure what you are mostly shooting but the 50mm doesn't seem wide enough for a lot of things now and I'd say I prefer my 85mm for portraits because of the longer focal length and it seems faster to focus to me, but having said that, the 50mm a f1.4 gave me some concert images that I probably would not have gotten otherwise.
