henri_karapuu1 0 Posted February 21, 2002 Shit, this is strong stuff! Rated it 9/10 which is best i'v given here so far. Rating is based on the emotional impact the image had on me. Link to comment

nick_s 0 Posted February 21, 2002 This certainly is a powerful shot, and, for the most part, well composed. The pole on the right with those two "balls" (or whatever they are) is certainly distracting though, and would be my main criticism. Link to comment
bcunha 0 Posted February 21, 2002 You should teach some people here how to shoot a good portrait of street people. My only observation would be for some better contrast. Hard to believe that you are jobless. Only in Brazil... Link to comment
scott_cary 0 Posted February 22, 2002 This is a powerful and shocking photograph that made me wince when I viewed it. There are other good photos in this folder as well but is somebody pulling our leg here? What's with the group of comments and 10/10 ratings from 5 people who joined Photo.Net today? Quite a loyal fan club. Link to comment
johnorr 0 Posted February 22, 2002 Nice tight crop but those two poles are distracting (if you going to give a 10 it must be just that). Everything else is fine though. This photo reminds me of the scads of images of the homeless...boring and unoriginal. But this is a burn victim (blinded) and it looks as if his expression tells us he is looking off somewhere. Very good indeed but a 10...no way! High marks from me but not a 10. 8 on originality because it is a typical portrait pose/angle but does have that unique texture. 8 on composition because those poles are distracting IMHO. Great job congrats. Link to comment
antonio1 0 Posted February 22, 2002 Sure we have an horrendous-looking subject here. Is it enough to make of this one a great picture? Does the picture reveal an untold story which asks for a shock to claim world's attention? I don' t think so. It's just a terribly hurt man, but we don't know why his disease is exposed here. In lack of this, the picture falls very short to be Salgado. Looks more like horror pictures of car accidents. Or pictures of freaks. Definitely NOT pictures of the year. Im not used to place low ratings, and I like very much the photographer's portfolio. Still, since the picture seems to scream for attention, and to move people's feelings, I feel forced to expose mines. Link to comment
dennis jones 0 Posted February 22, 2002 Picture: Good job on the exposure, tones and lighting. Composition not bad.Subject: Just not the type of photo I shoot... but you did a good job. Link to comment
lucas_griego 0 Posted February 22, 2002 Paolo, Your folders show you have talent and a good eye.. so I'll be bluntly honest about this particular image... Aside from the shock value of this photo it's not very impressive. The lighting, composition and cropping are about as regular as they come. I don't get any story from this - it doesn't explain any tragedy, make me ask any deep rooted questions or give me any insight into human suffering, courage or the human condition. It comes off as a grotesque snap shot. ok.. that being said. YOUR OTHER WORK IS VERY WELL DONE AND VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!! ANYONE COMMENTING ON THIS SHOT OWES IT TO THEMSELVES TO CHECK OUT MORE OF PAOLO'S OTHER WORK IN YOUR FOLDERS!!!!! (err.. am I aloud to say that in a critique?) What I do find brilliant and very well done are the following images in your folder. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=588851 http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=577079 http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=577050 I find these images to be incredibley strong and they easily meet the standards for editorial and photo-journo work I have seen in the US, Europe and Asia!! After seeing your other work I am quite surprise you posted this particular image when you have so many other ones that I find to be extremely strong. I am glad I looked at this shot that I don't think very much of... it gave me the opportunity to enjoy the rest of your work which I find to be well crafted, insightful and impressive. ciao, Luc Link to comment
carl smith 0 Posted February 22, 2002 I've mentioned it in other powerful photos. Anything that can make me whince, puke, twitch, faint, sigh, relax (pass gas), or dream about a better place [this list is never consistent] is usually a powerful photo. Not to mention a good one. Nice job. Note: I'm not saying it necessarily did all that, or in that order. Link to comment
kevin7 0 Posted February 22, 2002 i don't think its as powerful a photo as it is a powerful subject. looking at this person in real life would give me the same or stronger feelings than seeing a picture of him, so i don't think the photo per se is that unique. i also agree that the photog has better images deeper in his folder, and enjoyed very much looking at those. the 10/10 scores (especially when that's the person's avg. rating) by brand new members concerns me. hanna_cowpe 0 Posted February 22, 2002 If everything about this photo was exactly the same except that the man had a "perfect" face, people wouldn't look twice at it. It is only the shock factor that gets people's attention and comments. Link to comment
marco mugnatto 0 Posted February 22, 2002 Paulo, don't do this again. I love your photos but you clearly called your friends (or maybe created new accounts your own) to give you 10/10 and positive comments. Don't ruin your image (which was very good to me) this way. Link to comment
lucas_griego 0 Posted February 23, 2002 Whatever people thought of this photo is fair enough.. I didn't think it was that great and explained why. But for people to make accusations and reprimands about his 10/10 ratings and how he obviously rigged this up himself is !@#!$#%#*& LAME!!!! hint hint... Marco Mugnatto Macedo If people on Photo.net would worried less about an arbitrary numbers rating system that is obviously easy to abuse and more on constructive critiques it probably wouldn't be an issue now would it?!?! Mr. Macedo - if you have proof of your accusations then by all means step up to bat.. IF NOTaccussations like that say far more about the person making unfounded accusations than the accused! As far as I've seen it's rather common on Photo.net for newbies to go in and rate either extremely high, say 10/10's or extremely low 1/1's on their first couple hours/days as a member. So does this mean newbies from Brazil aren't allowed to do the same?? Many of the 10/10's weren't from Brazil and they were from people I have seen posting and commenting here on Photo.net before. I think here we should give Paulo the benefit of the doubt. Or consider him innocent of what he's being accused of until someone comes forward with facts to prove otherwise. Last I checked there wasn't any notice on Photo.net about it being run under a state of Napoleonic Code!!!! Link to comment
marco mugnatto 0 Posted February 23, 2002 This is from feb 23, 2002, as I write this: - Andy Norman, Mary Grace, kenzo cattalay, Enem Leogin and Canian Judmancy. - They all have emails at zipmail.com or bol.com.br. (note: .br??? Their names aren't brazilian! We have Maria, João, Carlos, Pedro) - They all have registered their accounts on feb 21 and all their comments are from feb 21 too. - They all have rated and commented only photos from Paulo, giving 10/10 almost aways. Ok. I admit. I can't proof. :-) And yes, brazilian "newbies" can do this too. I only asked him to not make this again (if he done that) because I like his work a lot. I think it's a good advice, since other people began complaining about the same as I. Link to comment
bcunha 0 Posted February 23, 2002 That's why they invented personal e-mail, Marco... Now back to photography. Link to comment
dean_fleischman 0 Posted February 23, 2002 What can I say? Undoubtedly powerful yet unquestionably disturbing. Excellent photograph. Link to comment
jodie coston 0 Posted February 24, 2002 I had to come look and comment. I've purposedly not clicked on this all week because it makes me uncomfortable. Which is probably what you were going for, so now I figure you deserve to hear that you did your job. :) The two dark spots on the right of the image are distracting and keep this from being a perfect image, but overall it is VERY well done. pampolin 1 Posted February 27, 2002 I really can't understand you. Why you worry about ratting of my pictures. You just have questioned rates 10/10. Why don't you said anything about people's rate 1/1? I leaved my pictures in this site to everyone see and comments. Each one says or think what want. This is free! You need to respect people's opinion. If you give 10 or 1 to my pictures, I really don't mind. What's difference does it make? This is not a contest! If everyone in this site give me 10/10 to all my pictures, I will not gain anything. No money, no contest. I really hope is not happening one thing in my country we call `inveja`. You know what is it! Link to comment
oliver_indra 0 Posted March 12, 2002 Extremely strong picture! Finished my rating routine and lets me sit upright! Jeeez! Link to comment
laura2 0 Posted September 25, 2002 Tears just sprung to my eyes. I feel deeply for this man, which is why I gave it 10/10. It's an extremely powerful picture, in my own opinion. It looks like he was burned in a fire at a fairly young age and this is the after effect. I pity him so badly that I wish I could do something to comfort him. Link to comment
