I am an admirer of his "hyper realism" oil paintings, and own quite a

few of his prints and 1 original. By using Velvia, I had hoped to

create a similar feel in this photograph as to his oil paintings. At

any rate, I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on this image.

There was no color manipulation done, and the slide is an exact match

(except for a bit more contrast and alot more detail in the slide).

for us novices, can you explain what velvia is and what exactly you did to get this image...

the colors are really great.

I think you've really executed a nice image (this forum should really allow you to rate for aesthetics, originality AND technical proficiencies).

If you're familiar with Jim Stimson's extensive color work in the Mono Basin, I'll go out on a limb and say there is an element missing here. The image is certainly strong (in mood) but not completely compelling in a way consistent with the power of the Mono Basin.

The image almost feels too linear and neat if you understand my point.

Still, very nice.

I used Fuji Velvia (slide film) specifically to add a "hyper-reality" to this scene. I am an avid admirer of Frane Mlinar's oil paintings and prints. If you are familar with his work- you'll know exactly what I mean. I thought this particular scene was pefect for this type of treatment.

I wasn't trying to display an image of the Mono basin within the context of its power- there are other areas of the lake which would more effectively do that. The intent was to create an almost surreal and tranquil landscape which was independent of its setting within the Mono basin.

I have alot more shots to scan from my trip, but I'm having a hrad time getting my scanner to fully cooperate....

I agree that the montain backdrop is a bit tame compared compared with these incredibly detailed rocks (it thought it was MF) in almost fluorescent pink water. But this foreground is amazing by itself, if somewhat cold in its utter perfection.

I really like this, i was just wondering if you could provide details such as the time it was taken, f.stop and sutter speeds details?

Im not a fan of Frane Mlinar, but, Im wondering how you have managed to achieve such a surreal effect in your shots. This one is no exception. Simply beautiful.

I look for surreal scenes to shoot. Mother nature is usually doing all the work- I just try not to screw it up too badly :-) I have a ton of other shots that never even make it to the scan stage because they don't appeal to me. I guess they would might to others, but I'm very particular..... I'm lucky to get 1 or 2 shots that make the grade every 10-20 rolls of film shot. I was pretty bummed at Mono because of all the lost opportunities due to jet trails.... they were everywhere.... Same thing happened when I went to Joshua Tree N.P. last year.

This is the best of the three similar photos. It is absolutely beautiful. Superb color. Just one little nitpick: The little rock on the very right leads my eye out of the photo. Have you tried cropping it out? Otherwise perfect composition. Very well done.

You're right, that last stone should have probably been cropped out. That's a fairly easy "fix" I should be able to handle :-) In my overzealousness to get this shot up on the web, I neglected the cropping. Thanks for the suggestion. BTW, what I think really makes this shot for me is the background mountains in a "normal" light- it gives the shot a "realness" that might be absent if the shot were strictly dominated by the almost neon and pastel colors.

very interesting composition, lots of details, milky water and unusual colours. That's why I claim that this is perfect photograph
