Hi

I try to create something in between photography and paintings. For that I use neutral density filters. here a 64times one. That's the reason why the color is intensified and the ocean looks smooth. I'm curious about what you think?

64x ND filter? That's a lot - makes 6 stops!?
Ok, I like the image and the light. There are two points that come into my mind which I would like to see a bit different:
The smoothness of the sea should get a bit more attention, maybe by choosing an a little higher standpoint / tripod size.
And second, the foreground is slightly runing out of focus towards the camera. These foreground rich perspectives usually live from crisp clear focus. For this second aspect I would love to hear what you think about my image here.

I like this photo a lot. I think the foreground may be a little dark if anything. I don't see the focus problem, but I didn't study it for very long. It is definately more dramatic than the photo linked to it. Nice work.

Marvellous, dreamlike quality. That island in the middle shouldn't work, but it does. It's almost like the pupil of an eye. Also it may be little too dark at the sides but that is a very very minor criticism.

Amazing photo under challenging lighting conditions. Were you doing anything to light the foreground? In my photo editor, the image is significantly brighter - there may be extraneous system influences around the darkness issue raised above. My only nit is that the horizon seems just a hair off...

Excellent photo, I wonder what lens you used and what was your reasoning behind using such a strong ND filter? Just curious,

Hi Marten

I used the filter here to get the ocean smooth. There's not much of it in the picture but it's enough to make the difference. The rocks in the foreground are rough, so I needed/wanted a smooth surface behind.

another, not so well knowns aspect of those filters: the contrast isn't so high anymore. I don't know why, it's an experience I made after taking lots of pictures that way. AND right now most important to me: the color is intensified. Especially if you take the picture in the early morning or late afternoon. Shortly before and after sunrise and sunset.

I'll upload some more images. right now I'm fighting with my scanner:-(

Thanks to all of you for the comments and suggestions.

Take care, Gabi in Germany

I love the surreality of this image; like many of your other immages it captures the alien-ness of Earth. The burning on either side of the foreground feels a bit extreme, but that may be my monitor, too.
