The Key

davidclapp

This is Hartland Quay on the North Devon Coast. More geographic faults and compressed rocks, this is an amazing landscape that quite simply leans on its' side. Literally all the rock formations are a 45 degrees one way or another making this rather difficult to traverse.

This shot was taken half an hour after sunset when the colours were at their peak.

EOS 5D, 17-40 f4L @ 24mm f16 for 4secs / 0.5secs ISO 100, a blend of two exposures.

David, another excellent photo. I love your post processing work. Not just the blend of exposure, which is seemless BTW, but it's the contrast, sharpness, and saturation that's really impressive. There's seems to be a bit of barrell distortion towards the left, or is that just the coast line? I'm jealous that you have such great seascapes to work with.

Thanks Will, the horizon is actually obscured by multiple breaking waves on the right but yes you are correct when you say the coastline on the right could appear to be distortion. If you can imagine it is almost parallel to the direction of the streaking rocks.

This is really interesting image. The mistlike flowing water adds a magic touch to the overall feeling. Very beautiful and calm.

David--yet another wonderful shot, again with your signature foreground, tack sharp rocks, and ghostly water. I agree with Will, I'm jealous of the beautiful seascapes you get to shoot but it is obvious this shot is also the product of a ton of skill and artistic genius--both through the lens and post-processing on the computer. I like your nice warm tones on the water and distant horizon. Furthermore, the composition with the rock "lines" going across the shot from left to right (instead of the viewer looking down the row of rocks) is a neat twist and also very pleasing. Keep up the good work--I certainly enjoy it!

A beautiful image. Your signature seems to be soft water, sharp rocks, and amazing morning/evening color. Great work.

Great perspective, and the rows of rounded rocks amid "soft" water makes for a great composition.

Stunning shot! I am learning to take landscapes and this picture is definitely gonna be a reference shot for me! Even the whitish coloration on the right foreground adds to the dynamics of this picture! Wonderful DOF! sharp! dramatic lighting!

My favourite from your photographs, and probably one of my favourite sea-scapes of all - the three leading ledges, the distant rocky outcrop silhouette, and most of all the wonderful out-of place veined boulder with the light and opposing diagonals to the rest of the shot. The sky is ideal for the shot as well, keeps it simple and the eye engaged where is most unusual, that foreground. Truly incredible shot, if I ever manage anything even close to this I'll be delighted!
