This the frozen waterfront close to where I live. The yellow/orange

patches are where the ice has completely melted and is the only place

where the the sunset colors are reflected. Yesterday I spent about 45

minutes photographing (74 shots) the area but only a few are worth

sharing with you. Comments and ratings would be apreciated.

I too have spent some time over the last week capturing the "meltdown". I like the composition of this image...very well done. The colors are well captured and your resisted the temptation to over saturate them.

I tried a few shots like this, this past weekend... Nowhere near this caliber.

Fantastic!

Out of curiousity... What do you do your light reading from? The reflection?

Thanks for the positive reaction and ratings. Digital allows you the freedom to more cheaply experiment with exposures. The first thing I do with 'high' dynamic range scenery is to use the Nikon D70 RAW format to capture the image - "they say' it gives you a slight edge in capturing that dynamic range. I also look at my 'highlights' menu to see if I have blown any - if any are blown then I lower the exposure until there are no blown highlights. Not in this case, but if I do need to bring back some shadows, I can use the PS Shadow/Highlight command to bring it back to what I think I saw. I have done a small number of experiments with HDR and I don't like what I see - I am sure I need to practice some more. With sunset shots, I meter on the clouds and then use the same "Highlight" principle mentioned above. Most metering systems give a good reading if they interpret a scene to be 18% grey.

PS I also keep an eye on the histogram on my menu.

Thanks for the pointers Tony.

If you want to see someone that has mastered the HDR, go have a look at Richard Gale's page.

I think he's up to using 6 or 7 bracketed images for his HDR images.

Thanks: i will look at the HDR recommendation you provided. With a tripod and varying only the exposure, I took a series (5 shots) of indoor shots with a window on the right side of the photo and it was quite bright outside. Not sure if it is a problem unique to D70 but the image that was properly exposed for the darkest interior portion, the window portion flared badly and it showed up in the final result. I also use Photshop and maybe I should try Photomatix that other people say does a better job.

Great shot! I did the same shots last weekend but boy that sun sure doesn't give you much time to set up - I only got one shot! So kudos if you got lots! Hope you don't mind me sharing mine with you here! You got much more of the beautiful orange though!

Thanks for the comments and ratings. Jan: I am pleased that you would attach your shot (a nice one) since that is what PN is all about. Today, I am off to a maple "sugaring-off" event here in Quebec and of course, I will carry my camera. Have a great day!
