Tyler, this photo is great, perfect colors in the sky, excellent contrast! A winner!

I posted a very similar version of this shot a few days ago but this is a different (still unmanipulated) exposure. Although the colors and exposure are only slightly different, I do think I may like this one better so I wanted to post it and see how it does and what people have to say. This one has more sunset color, the clouds at the top are not as dark, and you get a nice sunset glow on the water (which is a bit smoother from a slightly longer exposure). Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Tyler I see you got a wide angle? I think this is a lovely shot, you seem to get some colourful skies where you are. Glad the balance of the shot is not messed with. Do you have any vertical compositions of the boat and the reflections? The grass could do with a little lift here to hold some detail, have you had a look at the Luminous Landscape blending technique yet?

Ken, Ashley, and Sarah--Thank you all for your kind words! I've been busy recently but I will make it to your portfolios in the coming weeks to return the critique favor!

David--Thanks for taking the time to comment on my shot--I'm honored that such a great photographer is giving me advice! Yes, I did get a wide angle lens...one of my favorite photographers (uh, hum...YOU!) suggested it! I ended up getting the Tokina 12-24 for my Canon Rebel XT. I am enjoying it so far, although I admit it has been a struggle at times and a big learning experience! My shortest lens before this was 35mm so pretty much everything I shot lacked strong foreground interest (your shots are a great example of this...Marc, Vince, and others also utilize this well). I was used to shooting sunrise/sunset with only a lighthouse or pier as the focal points and now I'm trying to learn to include foreground waves, shells, marsh grass, reflections, etc. I'm learning, but slowly so I appreciate all the help I can get! I did check out the blending technique you suggested and it looks great...I'm taking my medical board exam in 2 weeks and I plan to focus more on learning PS and blending after that. I also have a 16 hour instructional DVD on PS that I will be using to learn about post-processing. About compositions...this shot is taken at 24mm and is as close as I can get to the shrimp boat. Can you elaborate a bit on what you have in mind for a vertical composition? Would I probably be using my 35mm lens for what you have in mind, or is the wider going to be best? I have tried some vertical compositions with the wide angle lens but the problem is getting clouds to fill the top of the frame (in other words, this night was a bit of an exception but usually the clouds with sunset color don't rise too far above the net poles on the shrimp boats). To answer your question, I do have just about every composition you can think of with this boat so I'd appreciate knowing more about what you have in mind, especially since your compositions are always so strong. I'm attaching a crop of a shot from yesterday which includes some foreground interest with the marsh grass (still needs more detail...I'll get there) and net pole reflections. Is this close to what you have in mind or are you thinking a lot wider? Also, are you envisioning the shrimp boat in the middle of a vertical composition of higher/lower? I guess I have stayed away from putting the boat in the middle because I'm been scarred by the photo.netters that bash the horizon centered shots and treat the general guidelines about horizon placement as an absolute law. Anyway, let me know if this is anywhere close to what you have in mind...I'll be heading to this spot several times in the coming week so I'll definitely try out some new vertical compositions, including any specific suggestions you have. Thanks again for the comments!
