Kim, excellent presentation!

Personally, I would like a little more fill light, the intensity of the background blue is too powerful in my opinion. The midtones of the stump and bird need to rock!

Dave, I was trying this for an experiment. It's a blue background cloth I hung from some brush behind this stump. It was about 10' behind. I'm thinking a more neutral-toned cloth would work better - perhaps some beige and subtle green to mimic trees out of focus. Right now, there are so many twigs that they are very distracting even out of focus. I mostly wanted to see how this would work; I didn't know if it would scare off the birds, but it didn't at all. It's just a little TOO blue, I agree.

Very good experiment Kim. The colors of the bird and branch are very accurate and the blues look like the sky. Go on and experiment more.

I like this blue sky effect. . it appears quite realistic. . I like the way you positioned the bird in this image. . it makes him look small and vulnerable . .

This is a really striking shot. I think it's the background colour against the natural tones of your subject. Such a beautiful composition. This is one of those moments when anyone could have snapped the shot but it's the photographer that makes it art. Beautiful lines and crisp focus. Very well done. Thanks for stopping by my portfolio.

I concur .. I think the blue looks great and provides a great contrast to the foreground. If you hadn't mentioned the cloth I would swear it was sky. Great thinking, great creativity, great shot. Regards!

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll probably be doing this wildlife contest again next year, so need to start thinking of my 'plan' before too long. :)
