How long are these exposures? Keeping the moon sharp, detail in the shadows and the color even with a ND filter is tough at times... Great job as always.

Dennis, my exposure was 4 seconds at F22, ISO 100. From my experience, only exposures longer than 15 seconds effect the moon when using wider angles - this at 40mm.

Not much room for improvement here Marc, my favourite of your most recent posts. The included elements all seem essential to portraying this mood, which is a sure sign of a strong composition. The contrast and interplay between form and colour are a treat too. I look forward to seeing the fruits of your month's efforts.

The half moon sets behind California's Lone Pine Peak as the first

light graces the summit and clouds. A particularly large Barrel Cacti

compliments the foreground. Thanks for comments and suggestions.

This is also my favorite of your recent submissions. Wonderfully composed and executed. I initially wished for a bit more exposure, but after staring at it for a while, I have really grown fond of the darker late evening light that is made complete by the moon overhead. Thanks for your recent comment on my Puget Sound photo.

Wonderful shot of a much photographed subject. If it was available for rating I'd give it a pair of 8s!

Marc,

I love most of your photos. This picture also has very nice composition, positions of the moon, horizon line and the cacti could hardly be better. The light on the mountain and the glow in the sky is what I always dream of. I however thought the foreground is not as interesting and therefore unessential for this light and condition. Part of the reason I thought the foreground was boring, because of the dull colors of the grass/cactus under shadow. Of course you/others may disagree.

I think I like another photo from your trip more, which is composing only the mountain. I have attached the crop of your picture (although little postcard type), which I think lets the eye enjoy the light, mountain and the sky with the moon.

I have another image from this morning in which I only composed using the mountain, but I felt the Cacti was also a valueble asset.

The foreground is perfect. I think the subtle colours of the foreground is excellent. It's an interesting part of the composition, however, it doesn't overpower the ultimate subject, the wonderful glowing mountains. It's similar to another recent post that had a number of trees in the foreground, which was also a brilliant photo.

I have to disagree with the alternate crop above. i think it's the diagonal balance between the cactus and the moon that holds this image together compositionally.

Dear Marc

Wonderful image, as always. Your work is a great inspiration (though the rest of us mere mortals can only dream of ever capturing what you do on film (or compactflash)). I have seen your work recently in several major publications. Congratulations especially on your photos in Outdoor Photography and Popular Photography. You are well on the road to being the next Ansel Adams or Galen Rowell. And when I discovered your age, your work is even more amazing.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for the joy and cheer you share by sharing your amazing photos with us.

I think the cacti really anchors this image, and I like it's inclusion and placement. It truly depicts the rugged environment and the beauty that encompasses the Sierras. Truely another beautiful image.

I'm interested in your shots' composition and how you control light, in this shot foreground is really great and makes a good composition with the mountainscape in background, I really admire your works and they are great idea and classic shots which help me to improve my photography by looking at your shots.

I wish shooting landscape with you, that would be fantastic:)
