extensive use of curves. More or less unmanipulated otherwise.

I always liked different approach to bird photo. This has very good composition (would like to have a little more on the bottom), but what are these diagonal shadows? It somehow doesn't belong to the rest.

They are either shadows, or OOF gras, not sure. That was actually one of the things i liked about this image and brought them out more through post production. I thought they helped to draw your eye into the frame. The only reason i didnt leave space on the bottom, because i agree with you that there should be more space down there, is that the blown highlight down the middle of the lake took up too much of the frame. By keeping the crop high i was able to keep more of the black lake, thus more contrast. Good move or not? i'll upload to this thread the uncropped as well as a lower crop.

Thank you for your critique on this.

Oh I like the upper part. It makes a lot for the composition, but I am not really sure for shadows. Like I said. It's not obvious what they are, and kinda distract from the rest of the photo. But let's wait for other opinions on that. It may be just me... :)

i can bring ths shadows back through curves. My quota will be clear late tonight to submit this for ratings, and put up this image not quite as manipulated.

I would like to see more of the bottom as well but the shadows are what made me LOOK! A bird photo in B/W is a challenge you rose to quite nicely!
