How does this work as:

1. A family history photo

2. A "classic" generic old-fashioned type of photo - could you

picture it on a greeting card or such?

Thank you very much. For some reason I've not been able to get any

feedback on this at all...Comments and ratings much appreciated!

I'm not sure that I could picture it on a greeting card, but it is a beautiful shot. Interesting elements and a nice composition.

I might come in a bit closer so as to reduce the depth of field. Not everything has to be in focus, especially with a photo like this.

Elaine,

This photo works for me. It has a very nostalgic feel and using b/w really accentuated this. You did a wonderful job in printing as the contrast on the picture stands out. There are a lot to see in the picture but not boring...if you know what I mean.

One comment in regards to the hat. I do not know from my screen if the hat is almost black or does it have some details on it. From my screen, it took a long time to figure where the hat was and what the big blob of black spot....

Again, Elaine...good picture...you must have gotten your grandfather's artistic side !!

And one last thing....This would be a great postcard material !!

As a still life it doesn't work for me. I am interested in the arrangement of the hat and the old box but I can't see enough of them. By concentrating on making the photos more visible you have "stolen" from the overall composition I feel. Maybe try it again from farther back Elaine with the photos just one element and fewer of them. And sepia tone the whole thing just to see what happens. Thanks for opportunity to comment.Gerry

One more thing. If the letter in front is going to be prominent, I want to see the script visible and clear. Yes they knew penmanship and they wrote letters in them there days:-). Worth redoing Elaine.Good luck.

This picture works for me too. I think it might be better classified under your photojournalism section, since the history you quoted gives the photo needed context. I am impressed by your creativity, and I like your portfolio a lot.

Dear Elaine,

The subject reminds me of photographs by Josef Sudek in his cycle "remembrences". Some of his photographs are accessible on the internet. Have a look!
