blowingsky 0 Posted February 22, 2007 In terms of critique, the question really is: if I saw this photograph with no title or introduction, would I see emotional intensity? Or better yet: what do I see when I look at this image? What I see is a man withholding himself, removing himself from the act of being photographed. I don't know why. His eyes are withdrawn, non-engaging. His hand is in front of his mouth, rather than on his chin or cheek. Because of those eyes, he looks more tense than relaxed. These are all preconditions of anxiety, but I don't necessarily see "intense" except in the cropping and in an interpretation of the eyes. It's a good photograph. I like the composition and the directness. I am not sure about the soft focus, as if you shot this inside the close focus limit. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted February 23, 2007 I actually really like the posing and the cropping and the gaze is not so much intense but "thoughtful". I find it (the shot) is a little "too close". It looks fine when viewed on the thumbnail but seems right up in your face and a tad out of focus once viewed larger. The shoulder is a bit bright but not bothersome. All in all I think it's a good image but I would retry it if possible. I hope this helps and doesn't offend! I am always so afraid of speaking the truth of what I see because I know other people see things differently. That being said, remember I am only one opinion. You know I am a big fan of your work! sharshar 0 Posted February 23, 2007 I always welcome your crituqes, they are thoughtful, sensitive, and honest. I agree with your comments, especially about it being so close and so "in your face". Since he is my soul mate, best friend, lover, shrink, mentor, and tech support, I have the opportunity to take portraits whenever he is willing. Point a camera at me and all I can think of is how my hair looks, if I have any makeup on, etc. Point a camera at a man and they are flattered. Men!! Link to comment
