Hi Tony, we are getting a blizzard here today you can only see about a hundred meters at most outside.....Well curiousity is getting the best of me, how deep are these canals generally, are they usually over your head?....Are the trucks taking over from the canals?......Of course I'm enjoying your photograph.....Jim

Jim Buddy hope the weather is getting better in Indiana

The Zuid-Willemsvaart ("South William's Canal", named after King William I of the Netherlands with "South" added to avoid confusion with two other canals commissioned by and named after the King: the Willemsvaart near Zwolle and the Noord-Willemskanaal in the province of Groningen) is a canal in the southern Netherlands, providing a shortcut in river Meuse between the cities of Maastricht and 's-Hertogenbosch.

King William ordered the planning of the canal, and construction started in 1823. The canal was completed in 1826 and named for the king. The 123 km-long canal runs through the Belgian province of Limburg, the Dutch province of Limburg and, for the largest part, through the Dutch province of North Brabant. At the time of the canal's construction, all of these regions were part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815?1830/39).

The canal created new possibilities for development of the poor towns on the sandy grounds of North Brabant, such as Helmond and Veghel and created an alternative traderoute for ships that did not want to sail the Meuse.

Thanks Tony, for all that imformation.......Monday and Tuesday we had about 13 or 14 inches of snow.....the snow plows have been busy, so they have done very well opening the roads......The sun is shinning yesterday and today......more snow is predicted for this weekend.....if the wind blows very much, the roads will not be passable......I will email you a shot of our driveway, so you can tell about the amount of snow.......Jim
