phyrpowr 0 Posted February 12, 2007 Maybe a little more foreground, with those furrows in the snow, and a little less sky, about the reverse of this. I still like it, good feel for farmland Link to comment
dberryhill 3 Posted February 12, 2007 I see Jack's point, but I don't share his opinion. I think the open sky reflects the sparsity, the openness of the place. It also forces the viewer's eye to the details and the muted and lovely tones. I haven't been there, but this is the rural Midwest as I envision it. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted February 13, 2007 Mike, every now and then I come across an image that really grabs me, and this is one of them. There is something about the pastel hues and the cool blue of the bins against that vast milk sky, all set against the contrasty textured soil that brings it all together in a perfectly balanced composition. I can picture it hanging on my wall with a thin blue border and a massive white matt. I guess standing out there in the cold isn't quite so soothing as looking at it from the comfort of a warm computer screen. Thanks for sharing it. Link to comment
Mike Marcotte 49,938 Posted February 13, 2007 Jack & Doug, Thanks for that feedback on the cropping. I never know what is right when it comes to that. & Thank you Hanna for your comments. I like this one too for some reason the air was a little thick that day & the bins showed up blue. Also I'll take your advice on the matting if I ever hang this one. Thanks all for some good feedback. Link to comment
davidroossien 0 Posted February 16, 2007 Love this one too. It looks much like a drawing, sketch, or blueprint rather than a photo. You might want to try it with more blue on the bins, especially the largest one. It gives a more playful feeling. Link to comment
kentb2 0 Posted February 16, 2007 Mike if I had forgotten, this image brought back immediately the purity and unadulterated style of your work. It?s controlled and free at the same time and as commented could easily be a painting or pastel drawing. I personally think the amount of white sky accentuates the precision of the geometric space. It allows the eye to confront the minimal elements and there scale in no uncertain terms. This is wide-open space and stark. It?s probably cold and the sky if dull and flat. The scene is familiar?very familiar. It lacks color and the head-on angle makes everything look even more two-dimensional then it already does thanks to the lifeless sky. It is for these very reasons that I find this image exceptional. You bravely and artistically saw this shot when many would not have. Thanks for sharing this image. I find it a pleasing and sophisticated color composition. Link to comment
ldarnell.com 0 Posted February 18, 2009 no more foreground for me. i'd like to suggest something you could do to this that would make it more acceptable to me - but I can't. It's perfect. what's here is excellent counterpoint to what else is going on in the composition. Wyeth-like, and yet, the color and rhythm of the silos is exquisite and distinctly not southeastern Pennsylvania. ...and the farmer's faith: an arrow pointing to his maker, that which dictates the random bounty and bust of his toil. my my my, what a wonder full, beauty full, stark, heavy, simple image. horray! a masterpiece.
