What do they sound like, Kim? Do they have a sweet song, or more of a jay call? There are so many birds you would love here....ready to make a visit?

They mimic other birds - sometimes hawks and so on. They have a very noisy sound - you can't mistake it. They "talk" to each other - this one was calling another one quite a distance away. Greenjays are funny birds. I'm sure I would love it there, Linda. We are having fun with this contest, though, and have seen 4 or 5 kinds of birds we've never seen before.

I'll be amazed if you guys don't win! I love the background in this (along with the bird, of course).

Twigs can be a real pain, although at least in this one, they didn't block the bird. I have other shots I took at the ranch where there is one one-of-focus twig in front of a woodpecker and another in front of a thrasher and it ruins the shot. You can't clone.

Really wonderful composition & DOF on this one. I love the shadows on his breast. Because of the branches, this one almost looks like a watercolor. Super job!

I'm not sure if this one will be an entry or not. I was hesitant because of the branches. But it seems like it's not bothering you all too much. Thanks for commenting!

Of course the background is my main concern with this shot - too

busy or okay because the bird is unobstructed? Comments welcome -

thanks!

Very cool shot, You caught him at the right time & the twigs add just the right amount of depth. I love his colors, cute little guy :-)

With an average score of 4/4, I guess this will not be an entry! Going back out this weekend and we'll see what we get. At least the weather is supposed to be sunny finally!!!

Hi Kim, You have a great collection of photos, I really admire your work. I noticed that you actually used more than one zoom lenses to shoot the photos in your porfolio, I am wondering after using all these lenses, do you have a preference to the three lenses currently you are using, the nikon 70-200 f2.8 vr, nikon 80-400 vr and the sigma 50-500 zoom? what is your opinion especially on sigma 50-500, it looks very sharp to me but since your photo size is small can't really tell if it is really the case. thanks Daniel

What can I add?? This shot is GREAT! Please do not make your decision on whether this will be submitted for a contest based on ratings here. AWESOME!!!!

Daniel, I just got the Sigma and I LOVE it for bird shots. It does take very sharp pictures. All the zooms are good lenses and I'm happy with all of them; however, for wildlife shots, the 500 is now my lens of choice just because I can get closer with it.

Heather, thanks - I appreciate your comments!

Beautiful photo, Kim... I like the busy branches in this pic! Those random branches are making good balance in the frame, and also are creating natural feel.

...and the contest continues, huh? I like all the branches. It brings the bird to the forefront. The background is great and nicely offsets the Jay. Good job!
