In the winter of 1963, I began documenting living conditions in the

desperately-poor coal-mining region of Eastern Kentucky. On my first

trip to the area, I photographed this out-of-work father and his boys

in their mountain home in Pretty Roof Hollow near Hazard. The

newsprint "wallpaper" used in an effort to keep out the cold gives

some indication of their situation.

bill, it would be interesting if you could go back and capture these subjects again...as they are now (if they are now)...when you see a photo like this, I think it is natural to want to know how things worked out for them. ken
