Playing with Distortion Brushes :)

This week is lesson 5, I'm really enjoying the learning process. On this particular image, I played in Painter IX using several distortion brushes. Water Bubbles was one I liked pretty well, along with the Smeary, Hurricane, Marbling Rake & Turbulence brushes.

I combined the 5 brush strokes until I was happy with the results. Above is the original photo, it was not very clear & was given a softened blur look. I created the background mat from the original image using only the Marbling Rake brush over the entire image. Then combining the 2 in PS (original & painterly version) adjusting levels, etc. The end result, while it is a distorted photo, is what "I" saw & felt when I originally took this image with my camera. Awe! Expression of oneself can be so self satisfying :)

What fun! :)

This is very beautiful! Would it be really horrid of me to say I liked the original better? Oh no! After all your hard work on this. It really is beautiful but the original version has so much appeal also! Well it just goes to show, you need a beautiful image to start with in order to make something beautiful like this version! I'm not sure how to rate it because I don't know what all that fancy stuff is you did to it - but if I were to rate the other version it would be 6/6. I really love it!

Thanks Jan. I liked the original too, but I felt it would transition well into a painting. Plus.... I had lots of fun recreating it with all those whimsical brushes :)

Jayme, I really like your background matte. The one area that I'm not really sure about is the sky area.

I finally broke down and got Painter IX.5. I had been playing around with the trial version and really wasn't sure. Then we had some dialogue and said, what the heck. I won't hold you accountable if I throw it is the trash. Like you said, it is different than PS.

Thanks Dave, glad to hear you won't hold me responsible :) I bought mine about 2 years ago & believe me I could not understand it at all. So...... I saw that on Betterphoto.com they had an 8 week course. My Xmas gift, from me to me :) It was well worth the price, just to understand the darn thing :)

So... if you have any problems, let me know. I think I'm getting the hang of it!

I'm going to disagree with Jan and say I like your posted version better than the original. Very pretty! You're doing some great things with this program, Jayme.

Thanks Kim,

I remember when you told me you thought I'd enjoy Painter. Wow, you were right! I love it! It is just what I needed to get my creative juices flowing again! I was feeling rather flat :) Kind of what I call the "been there, done that" syndrome. A whole new world!

Quite the artist, Jayme. I really like when you post the original, so I can see where you have taken it. After seeing the cigarette butts turned into a flower bouquet it's obvious that you can make a silk purse out of a cow's ear! You are so talented. I love seeing your work. Well done.

Keith- You are too kind :) Plus, I love the old saying :) The "cow's ear" makes me giggle! I've always heard it was a "sow's ear". :)

HA... but I am an abstract artist (in real life) And... I think my photography shows a bit of that side. :) ~ I really love the way the colors most dogether and you still can see the branches and the colors. You know exactly what it is but it just makes you feel the movement. The background is smooth but the front way the light is shining on the front just makes you look at every detail is just entrancing! The matt makes the picture!
VERY NICE! ~ LOVE IT! ~ micki :)
