kslonaker 0 Posted February 4, 2007 Thanks, everyone. The way the contest works is you team up with a rancher and shoot on his/her ranch for 5 months. There are 53 classes you can enter. First place in a class is $500; if you have the most winning classes, you get the grand prize, which is $6,000, I think. You split any winnings with the rancher. It's called the Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest if you want to look it up. First time I've entered; it's every second year. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 5, 2007 This is another wonderful addition to this lovely bird series and again the exposure is perfect here and so the details and tone www.camerause.com Link to comment
williammccarey 0 Posted February 5, 2007 Apparently the contest is not run by photographers. No PS, no cropping, as-shot? Sort of counter to the reason we all went digital. Anyway, you have a great shot, no noise I can see, and the focus is excellent. Link to comment

kslonaker 0 Posted February 6, 2007 Tough contest - big bucks, William! You can do some basic PS - like sharpening (but if you oversharpen, it's disqualified), minimal cropping, only cloning to remove dust spots, slight brightness/contrast adjustment. They want the RAW files, plus the TIF and JPG so they can see what all you have done. The hard part with birds is they always seem to have a branch or twig in the wrong place and you can't clone it out. I was lucky with this one - the background was a cloudy sky. Link to comment
wim.ipenburg 0 Posted February 7, 2007 Wow Kim, You and your Nikon did a real great job! Wim. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks, Biswajit and Wim! I'm pleased with this one, but many more shots to take for this contest. It runs until the end of June. Link to comment

kslonaker 0 Posted February 10, 2007 Thanks, AK. We're going in this contest more for the challenge than for the money (although that would be a bonus!!). :) Link to comment
kim_tural 0 Posted February 10, 2007 Great shot Kim, nice soft tones and a perfect background. I was going to ask you how you got the background white but I read the answer above. Good luck with the contest. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted February 10, 2007 I thought at first you had dropped the bg in PS but reading your comment I see that ain't allowed. The competition sounds fun and I find different photgraphic demands to PN are a useful challenge. Link to comment
ljk 0 Posted February 12, 2007 There is nothing like a challenge to get the creative juices flowing, Kim. I find it discouraging at PN sometimes.....and have looked elsewhere for fun and competition. Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted February 14, 2007 Hey good luck with the contest, Kim . . it's a little too far away for me to enter.. . btw, great shot! sometimes, I think we're on the same wavelength. . http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4012920. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted February 14, 2007 It's exciting to do something challenging and relaxing at the same time. An excuse to get out all weekend and do what we love to do. Even if we don't win, we still win. :) Donna, you're right - we often do have similar pictures. Link to comment
