hi matt. this is a scribing block, used for marking out exact points on sheet metal and machined metal parts. you use it by setting the height (of whichever point you wish to use) with a height gauge or 'slips'(on a surface table). then mark out your work. the upright thumbwheel near the centre of the block is the fine adjustment.the two dowels should push down to protrude below the block for using against the edge of the surface plate/table to give a smooth action,

i had to make one as part of my engineering apprentiship in the late seventies.

hope this helps .( nice photo by the way.)

regards

gary

I have a couple of these things that my dad gave me. Is this one made by Starrett? I absolutely love the precision at which these things can be adjusted. Absolutely amazing. And I find it such a coincidence that you've got a picture of one.

Interesting about your model. It appears to be identical to my Starrett model, every last detail.

Small world, huh Tony? So, this one was made by Brown & Sharpe, in Providence, Rhode Island. And apparently it is "NOT HARDENED" !

I guess it is a small world, Matt! Very cool. I really have no use for these things, but they are neat "as objects" to just have, I suppose. So much so that I brought one in from the garage and put it on a display shelf in the house. It all began when my father gave me a small metal lathe, a Unimat, which is a good one to learn concepts on, but not so good at actual production work unless you are working on very tiny things like models, etc.
