The Finals Days of Earth

davidclapp

Do we face an apocalyptic end to the world, have we have pushed the earth to far? This is just the beginning of the horrors we are about to face, you know this and I know that this is not fantasy but utterly real.

Last night I was very aware, probably too aware that this planet is changing and frankly it scares me to death. It was like being struck by lightning; governments, the media and the power mongering, the greed and self obsession, the children, the future, the past, thoughts racing through my brain on as I walked to this beach. We all face the same direction, religion is dying, we prefer a living god. Big Brother, Fame Academy, Reality TV shite reaching into every home, sucking the very fibre of individuality from our very souls.

Wonder is like good air; just like you I fill myself with as much as I can and just because I take pictures. As my days march onwards in this world I feel it is all that is good, sometimes. Cynical or realistic?

This is my beach, I was the only one here in days I am sure. 30 minutes later I was soaked to the skin, laughing with joy, feeling so utterly insignificant yet so connected. These rocks have been here for thousands and thousands of years, through all weathers and eras, the Knives as I call them. Smooth slate, worn by thousands of tides. They will be here long after I am gone, long after politicians; it is moments like these that make me feel so finite, that my life is so short. It is moments like these that make me desperate to live it to the full.

If you were not up for an introspective rant I apologise! This image is a turning point for me. Dont ask me why.

EOS 5D, 17-40 f4L a blend of two exposures to contain the high contrast and banish the NDgrads back to the camera bag. F22 for 2 secs ISO 50.

This is good and I am glad you shared some details about how you did it and your mood. It is interesting that you spurned the grads in favor of post processing. I did look briefly at your portfolio and you have some very nice work there which I will return to later. Thanks for sharing.

Great light even at the darkest part of the rocks. Almost apocalyptic.

Wonderful composition and lighting in this shot, David. Very, very well done! I love the reflections in the little pool of water.

Your pictures are spectacular and I congratulate you on your talent. Your "rant" was insightful and provided a glimpse into your psyche which makes the appreciation of your work even more meaningful. Some of us are motivated to take pictures because we realize our insignificance in this world and by doing so we leave a small legacy for posterity. Pictures are powerful communicators and we can touch others through them. Yes, the world is bleeding but that doesn't mean is dead. As long as there is life there is hope and it us up to each one of us to contribute to the healing.

And wonderrful insight. mI frequently feel the same way when out shooting in the field. It is so sad to think that humanity is content to destroy this natural beauty in favour of manufactured "beauty."

Discovered your work in a recent edition of a monthly photography magazine and tracked you down on photo.net. This is a wonderful photograph which shows the viewer much that they do not see for themselves. It's truly extraordinary, almost extraterrestial in my opinion. Keep up the great work - it's inspired and inspirational at the same time.

Enjoyed the rant as well - I'm sure a lot of people agree with you about shallow tv and futile politics.

Best regards!
