Looking down the barrel of a bear

I have tried to adjust the tone curve to bring out the bears

features with no luck. Any suggestions on what software or process

would be greatly appreciated since the look on his face is quite

interesting.

Also work the levels, move the center to improve the exposure--you can then correct the grass and get more detail in the face using shadows/highlights. Attached will give you an idea, but the face is all pixels likely due to not working on the original and a lesser quality compressed image.
