Dieter Schaefer 20,118 Posted January 19, 2007 Very nice capture. How about a little tighter crop left and right. Left to where the brownish color starts, right to balance it out? Regards, Dieter (7/6 anon) Link to comment
williammccarey 0 Posted January 19, 2007 Good, crisp shot from stem to stern. Nice colors. I like the mixed colors in the background too. I think with a tighter crop on the left the image would look like it had a dirty edge to it. Maybe a little less on the right though. In spite of these nits, the shot is superb! Link to comment
krmhlz 0 Posted January 19, 2007 The crop is fine and the background colors are a real plus. The Nuthatch is captured in a perfect pose, as is the call (title). Only drawback for me is the lack of real sharpness. Instead of feather texure I see digital mosiac and oversharpening halo. Nonetheless, the Nuthatch istelf is winsome, and the image is a revealing capture of the species. Link to comment

krmhlz 0 Posted January 20, 2007 Nicely done indeed, but perhaps sharpness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. To my eye this is what a very sharp image looks like. Link to comment
bgeg 0 Posted January 20, 2007 Gordon, Thanks for your input, I think what you fail to realize, is that everyone does not have the same monitor and most are not calibrated. It also appears slightly over sharpened on my calibrated monitor, but in my experience posting on the web, I generally get more favorable comments when it is. B. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 20, 2007 Nice shot Bill. Question on the sharpness. In Gordons shot I see no detail in the white on the chest, it's a blur as is the white under the beak. I also see some noise on the head. Is that my monitor or is that what others see also? I frequently (but not always)am disappointed after uploads to the site and wonder what others experience. Is it possible for a monitor to vary from day to day? This shot looks sharp to me with good detail and any more sharpening would put you over the edge on noise IMHO. Link to comment

bgeg 0 Posted January 20, 2007 You always lose some sharpness, due to compression when you post on the web, I don't know what kind of photo editing software you have, I have PS CS2, I always keep my original files, but in addition I keep a file of favorites on my hard drive as a screen saver and I resize these to a maximum width of 1000, and then do my photo editing, I use smart sharpen to where it looks right to me. If I am going to post it on the web I resize to whatever for this site 800 and then I go back to smart sharpen and add another 10% before saving for the web @ as close to 200k as I can get. It usually works. Your monitor should be consistent I have never seen one that varies. I hope this helps. Thanks for you comments! B. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 20, 2007 Thanks Bill, that does help. I may not be resizing for the web at the right number. Link to comment
williammccarey 0 Posted January 20, 2007 Bill, you might try the unsharpen two step: Amount = 500% Threshold = 2 (noise filter, not in Smart sharpen) Radius = 0.1-0.3 (depending on your taste) Click OK, then do it again Amount = 50% Threshgold = 0 Radius = 1.5-3.5 Always do this as the very last step after resizing.
