Excellent composition and tonal range. The trees(?) in the background are a slight distraction in their present form. My preference is to either see them more clearly or not at all. A minor drawback for a fine image.

You make a very good point that I appreciate. Powdered limestone rock is sort of like a giant gray card, and I had to jack up the contrast to get some texture. I tried to dodge the highlights in the trees to keep them in, but couldn't do more than you see here. Still, I think your critique is a valid one, and I'm grateful for your comment. I can't improve if I don't know what to work on.

this is a great shot. Love the tones, the sky, water, land makes this, to me, an excellent composition. I would have had to leave the trees alone and say "what you see is what you get", lol.

In a bit of seriousness, that is always the dilemma for me. I want to leave a scene alone, and simply record it as accurately and truthfully as I can. If there is beauty there, or a message worth conveying, it will be in the picture. If there isn't, then the photo isn't any good anyway, and I should move on to something else. There are enough creative artists in the world, but maybe not enough photographers who record the world as it is, in all its beauty and all its ugliness, and do it with skill and sensitivity, and a decent sense of composition.

Here, I saw a scene that looked to me like a landscape on the moon or another planet (with water). But, without modification, it would have been sort of gray drab. So, I played with the channels in PS until I got an image matching what I had in my head. But it isn't what you would see if I took you there. It is my creation. Am I proud of that? Not really. It isn't truthful, any more than the Playboy centerfolds or the car commercials on tv are truthful.
