Ozark Hillbilly from Arkansas

ameripol

Few people have ever really met a real Hillbilly. This man wasn't "Beverly Hillbillys' but was the real deal. He lived way down a dirt road in the Arkansas Ozarks with his brother and 17 Chihuahua's.They never left their property, grew what they ate, living without running water or electricity or any other 'modern' conveniences. I shot this with my first camera and it was my first portrait of a stranger. My access was through a local older woman who bought moonshine from him. I passed his place daily for a year before I shot this and never saw either him or his brother. They hid from anyone. He never spoke to me the whole time, just walked up to the fence, stared at me for 3 minutes and walked away. I'd just turned 18 and started out in photography. I believe he was in his 80's then, l972. I think it was shot with a pentax K1000 and a 50mm lens. I think he was blind in one eye. After all these years, I found the negative and scanned it. I still like it. His clothes, his hands and face, the barbed wire fence and post, all couldn't be more real as an example of a time gone by.

My first portrait of a stranger, one of my first photographs ever. This man was about the last

of the real 'Hillbillys' in the Arkansas Ozarks when I shot this with my first camera, a Pentax

and a 50mm lens in l972.

comments appreciated on this or any in my portfolio.

Thank you.

I can believe this is one of your first photograph. Tree is growing fom his head... More seriously, we all have worse attempts from earlier days (and I have even today), but you have nonetheless captured great look of him... No ratings, a s l a
