danieljohansson 0 Posted January 7, 2007 Amazing pic, to bad that the birds right wing is cropped, otherwise it would be a 7/7 Link to comment
floscal 0 Posted January 7, 2007 Beautiful! But I'm agree with Daniel. Regards, Flavio. Link to comment

rcamposv 0 Posted January 8, 2007 Rating system on this site is a joke. How can anyone give this shot a 3/3 or 4/4. Possibly these guys have never experienced about photographing birds, and hide themselves as anonymous to avoid giving ridicule explanations. I wonder if these "experts" have so much criteria or better photos than this as to rate in their way. or is just a childish act of jealousy? Link to comment
Dieter Schaefer 20,134 Posted January 8, 2007 Thanks, Ruben. The 3/3s were added in the last couple of minutes; and I have contacted PN to report an abuse of the system; let's see if anything is going to happen. A systematic down-rating of images is at this very moment going on throughout the bird category and I have been taking notes to document this. I had submitted another shot for critique that got hit the same way so that I just simply deleted it. I stand corrected, it is not only the bird category, almost every picture on first page of TRP is also affected. Link to comment
jeffgermo 0 Posted January 8, 2007 Very crisp shot. Nice capture. I agree that it would have been nice to have the wing kept. I also commiserate about the 3/3 ratings. It's quite bothersome. This shot should get nothing less that a 6 as far as I'm concerned. Keep up the good work, Dieter. Jeff Link to comment
Dieter Schaefer 20,134 Posted January 8, 2007 Thanks, Jeff. As you may have noticed from my comment above; there is a widespread down-rating campaign going on at PN right at this moment; many pictures are affected and I hope PN is going to correct this soon. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 8, 2007 The low rates are out of hand. After my last three posts I pretty much decided I was done, these kind of shots are way too tough to get to subject to that kind of abuse. There are also a lot of average shots being artificially inflated, calling into question the credibility of the whole system. Link to comment
caz 1 Posted January 8, 2007 Hi Dieter, lovely crisp image! Sherbet, what a pity about the wing! So near, and yet so far! (I know the feeling). Beautiful image nevertheless. What focal length was this taken at? Would be interested to know. Warm regards, Carole Link to comment
Dieter Schaefer 20,134 Posted January 8, 2007 This would be 420mm (630mm 35mm equivalent), hand-held I may add (as are most of my shots; I am trying to at least use a monopod now). I am actually not sorry about the missing wing part in this particular shot; having it would make entire bird look smaller and lessen the impact (to me at least). Warm regards here too, Dieter. Dieter Schaefer 20,134 Posted January 9, 2007 Looks like the PN moderators were able to reverse the effects of last nights rogue down-rating attack not only for the image shown above but for all or nearly all of the images that where effected. I sincerely hope they will be able to put some means in place to secure against such attacks rather than having to spend a day in cleaning up the mess created by a few that aim to spoil the fun for a good many. ruhikant meetei 0 Posted January 9, 2007 Dieter, This is fantastic shot. Did you use fill flash? The exposure is spot on. Ruhikant Link to comment
Dieter Schaefer 20,134 Posted January 9, 2007 Thanks to everybody for the comments! Ruhikant, no fill flash was used; I doubt if I could have since the bird was a distance away (shot with 300mm and 1.4x extender (630mm film equivalent)). Regards, Dieter Link to comment
dgmessenger 0 Posted January 13, 2007 Dieter, Your Brown Pelican collection is excellent. I especially like this one entering the frame in flight. Very crisp for a handheld shot. Great capture. Thanks for the information about the 3/3 attacks. I've experienced that quite often (perhaps mine are deserved). I find it quite discouraging. I think if PN required comments for low ratings, perhaps it may deter this activity. Regards, Daryl Link to comment
