Very nicely done, Tyler! It's especially good on "Larger." You might want to think about doing some serious printing with these.

Lannie--Thank you so much for your kind words. This was my first night trying to shoot night photos and I honestly found it to be remarkably EASY! I was really pleased with how things turned out. I have several more pictures of the bridge that I need to upload. I would love to start doing some serious printing with these shots but I don't even know where to start! Do you have any suggestions or guidance? I also don't know if I would need to start doing more post-processing. I have started to play with levels a bit more but really just create a big mess of confusion for myself--I end up with 20 different versions that I think are pleasing and can't decide on one. I guess I just need to practice, review the shots, and get input from others. After editing a lot of these pictures in many different ways (the bridge shot with the purple sky is one example) I ended up liking the originals best. For this shot all I did was adjusted the saturation and contrast a bit so it is pretty much straight out of the camera. At any rate, whatever advice you can offer for "serious printing" is appreciated...to this point the most serious printing I've done is getting a 5x7 enlargement instead of a 4x6 at Wal-Mart! :) I wouldn't even know where to get the shots printed! However, as humble as I can say so I am pretty pleased with the results on a few of my shots and so I'm starting to think about it more and more. Plus, I'm investing in a wide angle lens, polarizing filters, and some sunset filters soon so they will hopefull improve my results as well. Thanks again for stopping by to visit and comment so often--it is always nice to hear from you!

This is one of my first night/low light shots. It was taken about

1.5 hours after sunset with an exposure of about 1.5 minutes at f/8.

See the other pics in the same folder for other results of my first

night shooting experience. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated!

Tyler, I would buy a pretty good Epson printer, the kind with archival ink, and buy some paper of various sizes and textures from Epson. (The ink gets expensive, but the results are worth it.) Manipulate your photos as TIFFs, and then send them straight to the printer full-size. (The printer software will allow you to get all that data into whatever size format your printer will support--typically up to 13" wide, although some people can afford a 17" wide carriage, although I can't.) Just type in "Epson" at BHPhotoVideo.com and you can see what they can cost--some are for mass production, of course, and their primary virtue is their speed. For artists, slow printers work fine, as long as they can do what you want them to do.

Another alternative is to bite the bullet and send full-sized files to a very good lab and see what they can do. You will be astounded at how good a photographer you are.

Learning to get good prints is hard, even frustrating, and I am still learning, but I can get respectable prints in many cases. Printing is an art form unto itself.

Hire someone to mount and frame your prints--no point in trying to learn how to do everything, especially if you are as busy as I know that you are.

Hey Lannie! Thanks again--so, do you print your own stuff when you print shots? When you say to hire someone to do framing and matting, who do you get to do that kind of stuff? Do you just go to a local frame shop? Also, you said I could "bite the bullet" and use a lab--can you give me some examples of these labs? Do they have webpages? Also, do they do professional post-processing of your image? I'm curious to find out how much they cost. Thanks again for the help!

Tyler, this is my favorite photo of your first night-shooting experience. It really highlights the bridge, but has an aesthetically pleasing shoreline, and sweet reflections off the water, which your other bridge picture similar to this one is lacking. The cannon seems to duel with the bridge for attention in your other bridge shot. Looks like you're having lots of fun, and are achieving good results, too. Well done, Tyler.

Keith--That was an outstanding critique of all my night photos--I like them all but agree completely with what you said about the strong and weak points of them. This is also my favorite....the marshline I felt provided an interesting foreground curve, similar to my B&W shot "Showers of Sun Rays" in my Morris Island Lighthouse folder. Thanks for leaving some comments and helping me put my finger on the strengths and weaknesses of these shots!
