Love the colors and the muted light. Definitely conveys "time gone by" . My only nit would be to have left a little more room on the left in front of the cannon...the crop seems just a bit tight. Otherwise this is really a great shot.

Jennifer--I was looking through my old pictures and saw that you had commented on one of my shots many moons ago. Whenever someone comments on one of my shots I always return the favor but commenting on several of theirs--for some reason I don't think I ever visited your portfolio, for while I apologize. However, my overlook was really MY loss, not yours! Your work is fantastic! I think this is probably my favorite shot, although picking just one is just about impossible! If I were being picky, I'd agree about the crop being tight on the left but this shot is still wonderful. The composition is superb, the colors are pleasant, the the haze effect is truly unique and very pleasing. I love how it hides the other cannon and makes the distant part of the shot seem "ghostly" and peaceful. I notice that you have many, many shots with this fog/haze--do you head out and shoot every time there is fog or is there something you are doing in the image processing to give this effect? I'm just trying to learn more but regardless, your work is very pleasing. One more thing--where do you live in VA and where are these shots taken? I'd probably guess Fredericksburg, although I assume they probably have sights like this at Appomattox and other places as well. The reason that I ask it because I grew up just down the road in Tappahannock, VA (float down the Rappahannock River for 20 or 30 miles from Fredericksburg and you're there). I then went to school at UVA for 8 years and am now down in Charleston, SC. I'll be here until 2011 and then plan on heading back up towards Tappahannock and the Northern Neck area of Virginia. I just always think it's neat to meet people on this site that live near my hometown and photograph sights that I've seen before. Anyway, sorry I didn't make it here sooner but I love your work...great job!

Yes, they were taken in Fredericksburg, and yes, as funny as it sounds, when my husband goes to work at 5:30am, if it is foggy, he will scream at the top of his lungs up the stairway "It's foggyyyyyyyyy". Of course I come barrelling out of bed and throwing on clothes, hat, gloves, and as always my bag is packed, batteries charged, and I take off into the fog. It's a ritual sort of now, and it's a funny family joke, but yes it's real fog, and I don't care how much someone tells you that you can capture fog through photoshop, they are wrong, there is nothing like the real stuff. Take care, and thanks for stopping by. Jennifer.

What a great story! You get even more credit for getting up with such excitement for the fog! I agree...photoshop and RAW image processing can do a lot, but nothing replaces a perfect, unprocessed shot. You have many great ones...now, if I could just get someone to get me up when it's foggy...oh, that's right, I'm usually ALREADY AT WORK when the sun comes up! :( You've definitely inspired me to go shoot some fog next time I see it! So, I guess you guys live in or close to F'burg, huh? Go get a Carl's Ice Cream milkshake and eat it for me...boy they are good! :)
