I spent some time in Old Town Alexandria the other afternoon. A few days ago I had noticed that many of the historical homes in this area (some even date back to the Revolutionary War era) had beautifully decorated doors and windows for the holidays. Not with lots of bright lights ... but mostly with pretty wreaths and greenery around the windows and railings. I'll post a few of the shots over the next few days. They're very difficult to "straighten" out because the houses are not straight, the streets are built on hills (going down toward the Potomac River) and the sidewalks and front door steps are usually crooked. BUT, since many of the doors are modern, they are level. So I tried to use the doors to help get the right perspective on the rest of each image. Any thoughts are most welcome!

I really like the cobblestone street in this one....

Good shooting. You captured the essence of Old Town - cobbled street, red brick sidewalk, and a pretty townhouse with tasteful decorations. I like your idea for straightening an old building - just pick the newest part and use that for reference.

Hope you'll post some of the really colorful places and quirky touches that the owners add to them. You won't run out of subjects in Alexandria.

The cobbled street adds a lot to this shot - it gives a suggestion of all the prople, horsem carts, dogs etc that have passed this spot since the place was built.

Thanks for all of your comments, Colin. I had a fun day taking these photos. There are only a couple of places where they've left the cobble streets in Old Town Alexandria ... I hate driving on them ... but they certainly are charming. Happy New Year to you!
