Old Church, Outside Dumfries, Scotland (Resting Place of the Ruthwell Cross)

robertbrown

Shot in very bright late morning sun. This, I believe, 16th-century small parish church holds the priceless Ruthwell Cross, on which is inscribed the Anglo-Saxon poem, "The Dream of the Rood" (probably the most important poem from the Anglo-Saxon period).

I think you did a wonderful job of composing and exposing this image. I respect the detail in the white walls, both the lit side and shaded side....very very nice!

i think this is a neat portrait of a churchyard and its church. i also think that both subjects are strong enough in our minds that combining them as large parts of the image often results in loss of power for each. if you have the opportunity to return there, try getting a few different shots of this rich scene... for instance, one from 30m further back, another that captures the gravestones and only a small bit of the church, one of the stones from 3-5m up nearby tree (?), one b/w with only stones, another b/w with only the church, another of the graveyard from within the church, etc. the ethereal effects of infrared film also enhance churchyards if you're into that ;-) nevertheless, nice shot.
