I spent some time in Old Town Alexandria this afternoon. A few days ago I had noticed that many of the historical homes in this area (some even date back to the Revolutionary War era) had beautifully decorated doors and windows. Not with lots of bright lights ... but mostly with pretty wreaths and greenery around the windows and railings. I'll post a few of the shots over the next few days. They're very difficult to "straighten" out because the houses are not straight, the streets are built on hills (going down toward the Potomac River) and the sidewalks and front door steps are usually crooked. BUT, since many of the doors are modern, they are level. So I tried to use the doors to help get the right perspective on the rest of each image. Any thoughts are most welcome!

By the way, this house is six feet wide. No joke! The red on the right and the white on the left are parts of the homes on either side. Most of Old Town Alexandria is made up of old row houses, and this is an example of one that could easily be missed if you don't know to look for it!

I like the addition of the wicker chair and the brick pavement. As you might recall, we have lots of brick roads in our town. Very nice. Have a wonderful 2007.

Thanks, Joan ... I keep coming back to this one ... the six-foot-wide part will occasionally keep me up at night ... how does one buy furniture for a house built like that? :-) But I love how the owners decorate the outside. Where I live, you couldn't leave a wicker chair in front of your house or it would be gone in about an hour. Yeah. I love Old Town Alexandria! Happy New Year!

Colin - I'm not sure what the plaque is over the door/window ... but the same plaque is over a lot of the old row houses in Alexandria. The image above the letters ("F.I.Co") is of a fire engine....

I can see you have gone into door and window buisness lately. They are all so charming and I would have been shooting them too if I had the posibility. It's hard to choose a favourite (and nobody has told me to do so) but I think this one is very nice and inviting with the chair in front of teh window. It's very cosy and 'old Christmasly'

.... after a very hectical December I wish you a happy, healthy and rich 2007.
