tylerwind 0 Posted December 25, 2006 With my new found love of photography, my mom assigned me the task of taking a family portrait for a Christmas card next year. With Michael working as an orthopaedic surgeon in Cincinnati, me as an orthopaedic surgeon in Charleston, Ryan in Law School in Mississippi, and Trevor and Megan in school at the University of Virginia, it is quite a task to assemble everyone for a family portrait. My mom wanted to do it outside with our Christmas lights. It would have been nice to show the whole house but we would have been much too small so I focused my composition on the front stairs and we arranged the family. I had a 35mm lens (the widest I have until I buy my super wide angle...which will be soon) on my Rebel XT about 50 feet away. I shut it all the way down to f/4. It was a challenge to get a decent shot because my shutter speeds were around 1-3 seconds (hard to get 9 people to hold a smile that long). But, I think this one turned out decent. I know it isn't professional and wouldn't do well in the ratings, but I thought it was a decent amateur effort! We wanted the Christmas lights to show up well and it look like the house does at night so I took this shot about 10-15 minutes after the sun dipped below the horizon. It was quite a challenge to come up with a composition, expose for the lights/house/people all in one shot, and get a decently sharp exposure of 9 people! If anyone has any general comments or suggestions for improving my first attempt at a portrait please don't hesitate to let me know! I've never done a portrait of any sort but I do know it's a useful skill to have, if only for family pictures! Thanks for all the help and friendship--Merry Christmas to all! Link to comment
