wingell 0 Posted December 22, 2006 Here's another shot from my coverage in the 1960s of living conditions in the mining country of Eastern Kentucky. The kneeling miner is working a "doghole"--so-called because only a dog could stand up in the barely three-foot-high tunnel dug hundreds of feet into the side of a mountain. Link to comment
laxlindberg 0 Posted February 8, 2007 China today,over 3000 coalminers dies every year.I don?t know how many miners that has died in Kentucky.A picture like this make me wonder,why do the go on striking for their jobs.I hope this way of mining is gone.A very good document.I honor the people who could stand this. randall ellis 2 Posted February 9, 2007 This is perhaps the strongest of all the photographs you have in this folder. The short tonal range gives this a very gritty feel that works very well to create a strong sense of place. You also have a solid balance going on here with the cart on the left and the miner on the right. This is a very strong photograph with a lot of feeling. Having many previous generations of family members who worked the mines, I can say that you did a hell of a job capturing the setting in this one. - Randy Link to comment
